Marshall Space Flight Center's (MSFC's) History Gallery provides a tour of images that showcase the beginnings of space exploration, including pre-NASA U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama; the activation of MSFC as a NASA field Center, headed by Dr. Wernher von Braun, in July 1960; and the development of a space vehicle from conception through production and operation.
Marshall has managed many programs, such as:- Mercury-Redstone vehicle that boosted America's first astronaut, Alan B. Shepard, on a sub orbital flight in 1961
- Saturn rockets, the largest of which boosted man to the Moon in 1969
- Lunar Roving Vehicle (1971) for transporting astronauts on the lunar surface
- Skylab (1973); the United States' first crewed orbiting space station
- Three High Energy Astronomy Observatories (1977, 1978, and 1979) to study stars and star-like objects
- Hubble Space Telescope (1990)
- Chandra X-ray Observatory (1999).
- MSFC-developed propulsion systems that unleashed almost six million pounds of thrust to launch America's first Space Shuttle in 1981.
This gallery provides a look at MSFC's past leaders and the outstanding accomplishments that sent man to the Moon and beyond.
