After discussing the nature of abuse, both physical and emotional, the book identifies myths about battered women that keep many in an abusive home. A discussion about why a battered woman stays in a violent home explores the problems that children, family, Latino culture, and religious beliefs present. The book then turns to practical advice on how to get help in an emergency. This includes information on how hospitals and police departments operate and what the abused woman can expect from them. Alternatives available if the abused woman leaves home are considered, as are legal options. The victim's emotional state is analyzed, followed by suggestions on how to obtain needed emotional support during and after the abuse. A discussion of special problems considers such issues as immigration status, not having money, or not speaking English. Other topics addressed are the maintenance of protection after leaving the relationship and how social workers can best help Latinas. Glossary of legal terms, 53-item bibliography. |
