Abstract The article reports on a state Director's Survey that was conducted by the editors of School Bus Fleet early in December 1984. Survey forms were sent to all 50 State Directors of Pupil Transportation. A second mailing was sent to directors who failed to reply by the pre-Christmas deadline. Altogether 47 directors, representing 47 states, eventually submitted data. Conclusions were as follows: adoption of the various provisions of Standard 17 is spotty with certain of the provisions, such as the four light and eight light system and stop arms, in widespread use, with others widely ignored and that there is a decline in the number of pupil transportation fatalities among age populations.
