You are here: data / datapool / TOMS

NOTE: Due to problems with the scanning mirror on the EP TOMS instrument, data since 2002 should NOT be used for trend analysis (see TOMS News for Nov. 18, 2004).

Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) data is the only source of high resolution global information about the total ozone content of the atmosphere. The data set is important in studies involving upper air dynamics and chemistry on both short (interannual) and long (decadal) time scales. TOMS is the primary means by which regional (e.g., polar) and global ozone patterns have been monitored on a daily basis since 1978. TOMS instruments have flown on four satellites to date: Nimbus-7 (November 1978 to May 1993), Meteor-3 (August 1991 to December 1994), Earth Probe (July 1996 to present), and ADEOS (September 1996 to June 1997).

The data are grouped by Product Type, and the link in the "Product" column below will take you to a page listing available data products.

Product Level Description Begin Date End Date Number of Items
DVD Level 3 gridded version 8 ozone, aerosol, reflectivity and UV erythemal data and images from the Nimbus-7 (1978-1993) and Earth Probe (1996-2003) TOMS are available on DVD-ROM in ASCII format. Level 2 version 8 data from the Nimbus-7 SBUV (1978-1990) and NOAA SBUV/2 (1985-2003) instruments are available as well. 1978 2003 2
L2 Level 2 version 8 geolocated geophysical parameter data products at full instrument resolution for a single orbit in the new HDF-EOS5 (swath model) file format 1978-11-01 00:40:10 2003-09-01 00:51:59 108794
L3 Level 3 gridded version 8 ozone, aerosol, reflectivity and UV erythemal data at 1.25° longitude x 1.0° latitude resolution in HDF-EOS format. 1978-11-01 00:00:00 2005-12-31 23:59:59 9397

The level 3 gridded TOMS data are also available in ASCII format on-line via FTP download from the NASA/GSFC Ozone Processing Team.

Documentation and software for the TOMS data products are available. Additionally, we maintain a list of links to sites outside the GES DAAC related to atmospheric chemistry.
