Accident Information File

06/05/2001
Four people drowned while fishing in a water-filled quarry in Preble County, Ohio. One of the four, a 10-year-old girl, waded in too far, and her 11-year-old sister and a family friend went in after her. Hearing screams, the girls' father plunged into the water. All four perished. Three of the bodies were recovered that afternoon. The father's body was not discovered for three more days. The quarry, which is 300 yards long and 100 yards wide, has not been used to mine gravel for years. Water from a stream feeds the quarry, and heavy rains the week before created the strong currents.
