Celebrate the Festival of the Gathering Moon in Baker

Ely, Nev. – Celebrate the Festival of the Gathering Moon this Saturday, starting at noon, at the Baker Archaeological Site, in Baker, Nev.

The festival is a Western Shoshone tradition. It is held every year at the conclusion of the gathering season to provide tribal members an opportunity to share food and other needed items, and relate food-gathering experiences and techniques.

Festival goers will have the opportunity to throw an Atl Atl and there will be demonstrations on Native American flint-knapping and pine nut-harvesting methods. Native American artifacts will be on display.

Visitors also will be able to sample traditional Native American foods such as roast buffalo, Anasazi beans, and Elderberries with pine nuts, mint and honey. The event is sponsored by the non-profit Nevada Native American Cultural Society and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely Field Office.

For more information, contact Elvis Wall, Native American coordinator for the BLM Ely Field Office, at (775) 289-1800, or elvis_wall@nv.blm.gov.
