Summary

The Environmental Protection, Industrial Hygiene & Safety, Occupational Medicine, Quality Assurance and Radiation Protection Directorate (ADESH&Q) sustains and advances worker protection and environmental protection and stewardship. As a key member of the Laboratory's senior management team, the Associate Director for ESH&Q will report to the Principal Associate Director for Operations (PADOPS) and has line and program responsibility for five divisions: Environmental Protection, Industrial Hygiene & Safety, Occupational Medicine, Quality Assurance and Radiation Protection as well as the Price Anderson Amendment Act Office (PAAA), Worker Safety Office, the Fire Marshal and the ES&H Integration Office. The ADESH&Q will provide technical leadership in environment, safety and health and day-to-day management and direction of ADESH&Q's programs and operations. The ADESH&Q will lead strategic and tactical planning and program execution, ensuring quality service and interfacing with principal customers on ESH&Q issues. The ADESH&Q will champion culture change, emphasizing worker safety and environmental stewardship and focus on continuous improvement. The ADESH&Q will lead workers by example to exceed performance and quality objectives safely, securely, compliantly, and efficiently; and ensure open communication and integration of operations. The successful candidate will effectively address Laboratory goals for programmatic, business, and operational excellence and will be responsible for maintaining effective working relationships with Laboratory senior management, ADESH&Q managers, the ADESH&Q workforce, and internal and external customers.

Required Skills

Demonstrated success in line management of a large, multi-disciplinary technical organization. Expert working knowledge of ESH&Q programs. Demonstrated ability to integrate and implement tenets of multiple management systems including safety, security, quality, configuration management, and conduct of operations. Demonstrated strong management skills in planning and implementation, program and project management, performance-based management, and customer and stakeholder interactions. Demonstrated strong leadership characteristics, including personal integrity and accountability, fiduciary responsibility, trustworthiness in relationships, commitment to teamwork, commitment to quality and excellence in programs and operations, commitment to workforce diversity and human resource development, and effective oral and written communication skills. This position requires a Q access authorization. Applicants must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which usually requires US citizenship.

Desired Skills

Demonstrated experience managing complex ESH&Q operations or programs in a complex commercial or government entity. Successful experience interacting and working with the Department of Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration and programmatic secretarial offices.

Education

Advanced Degree (Master's or PhD) in business, science, engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
