Food and Drug Administration United States Department of Health and Human Services Food Labeling Regulations as published in the Federal Register, January 6, 1993 Diskette Edition I. Facts about this edition of the Food Labeling Regulations Officially published in the Federal Register of January 6, 1993, the Food Labeling Regulations are presented on the Federal Bulletin Board in a series of 27 ascii text files, 9 WordPerfect files for tables, and 16 graphics files in .tif format. While every attempt has been made to present the files exactly as they appear in the Federal Register, in any instance of conflict, the official printed edition of the Federal Register should be used as the preferred version. The table and graphics files have filenames that indicate the text files in which they belong. For example, the table for filename NO92_565.ASC (Health Messages: Fiber/Cancer) is listed as filename NO92_565.TAB later in the file system. All graphics files are taken from file NO92_519 (Mandatory Nutrition Labeling). The areas from which the graphics have been noted by a remark similar to "INSERT 591.TIF". This remark would indicate that graphics file 591.TIF has been taken from that area of the text. The tables have generally been taken from the area at the end of the corresponding text file. Using the filenames, one can readily establish which table/graphic file is meant for insertion into a given text document. The nine files containing tables are stored as WordPerfect 5.1 documents. They can be retrieved, displayed and printed through use of WordPerfect or any of the major word processing software packages capable of importing WordPerfect 5.1 documents. The 16 graphics files contain images of model food labels. They have been scanned from the camera copy used to print the January 6, 1993 edition of the Federal Register. They are stored as .TIF files on diskette 6, and can be retrieved, displayed, and printed through WordPerfect, or any software package with a graphics display capability. II. When you wish to view or print a designated table or graphic file (.TIF) of a label image, change to the file containing the appropriate table or graphic and retrieve it. If you are using a word processor such as WordPerfect to retrieve a graphic (.TIF) file, it may be necessary to perform the retrieval through the software's graphic feature. It may not be possible to read the very small text in the label image files on your monitor. In such cases, print a copy of the table in order to view the complete text. лллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллллл In addition to this bulletin board edition, the Food Labeling Regulations are available from the Superintendent of Documents as a set of 6 diskettes for $84.
