2005 Speeches
Remarks for Assistant Secretary Jendayi Frazer, at the First Anniversary of the Temba Lethu Clinic at Helen Joseph Hospital
October 17, 2005: Thank you for the invitation to speak today at this important event, which
commemorates a hopeful time in the history of South Africa and a remarkable
partnership involving our two countries. As many of you know, this is my first
visit back to South Africa since I completed my short, but much enjoyed time, as
U.S. Ambassador during 2004 and 2005. It is a special pleasure to visit a place
where despair is being replaced by hope and where the challenge of HIV and AIDS
is being met by dedicated, competent health professionals who are saving lives –
setting an example for the entire nation.
Launch of the Investigative Journalism Training Program, U.S Agency for International Development (USAID), Denise Rollins, USAID Mission Deputy Director—Remarks, Rhodes University
September 13, 2005: It gives me great pleasure to represent the U.S. Agency for International Development, commonly
known as USAID, here this morning. I am honored to join our valued partners,
Idasa, Rhodes and WITS Universities, at this auspicious event, the Highway
Africa Journalism conference.
National Basketball Association (NBA)/Basketball Without Borders Africa HIV/AIDS Awareness Event and Exhibition, Remarks by Carleene Dei, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)— Molestane
Centre, Soweto, South Africa
September 9, 2005: Welcome. First, let me wish my
compatriots from America’s National Basketball Association a rewarding and
memorable visit to South Africa. This is the second time I’ve lived in this
country, and I can tell you that it is easy to fall in love with this place and
its people and to keep on coming back.
Speech by Carleene Dei, Director, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Women in Higher Education Executive Leadership (WHEEL) Program - Cape Town
September 5, 2005: I was very pleased to be
invited to participate in such an historic event. When I received the invitation
to take part in the launch of South Africa’s “Women in Higher Education
Executive Leadership” (WHEEL) program, I said to myself: It is entirely fitting
that a program such as this should emerge in South Africa, considering the
extraordinary developments that have occurred since it became a democratic
nation a decade ago.
Remarks By USAID Director, Carleene
Dei at Annual Girls Scholarship Program, Doornkop August 9, 2005
August 9, 2005: Good morning to
everyone. I would like to acknowledge the presence of our partners, Humana
People to People, the managers of Child Aid project, the representatives of the
Department of Social Services and the Department of Education, our Community
Child Care Community members, of course the community of Doornkop, the
Scholarship Program Mentors who sang a song that sums up what they are all about
– “Lean On Me” ‘til you are strong enough to stand on your own and then others
can lean on you -- and of course, recipients of the Girl’s Scholarship Program,
that are among us today.
Remarks by USAID Director, Carleene Dei, USAID-Supported Farming
Entrepreneur
June 28, 2005: Today we are seeing an agriculture project supported by USAID through our
“Promoting Agribusiness Linkages” or “PAL” program. The PAL project operates
in 7 of South Africa’s 9 provinces. The primary objective is to facilitate
greater interaction and more transactions between historically disadvantaged
individuals or emerging firms and commercial agri-business. These linkages
create economic growth and employment opportunities.
Remarks by U.S. Ambassador Jendayi Frazer during her tour of North West
Province
June 28, 2005: Thank you very much, Thank you all for being here and I want to thank the Premier for her kind hospitality in receiving me and my delegation. In our discussions I had a chance to meet with two other MECs -- for Finance, Mr. Africa and for Agriculture, Mr. Duma -- as well as the DDG. I was able to meet with the Honorable Mayor from Mafikeng and I was also able to meet with the Chairperson of the House of Traditional Leaders. It was a very strong representation of her Excellency’s cabinet, so I thank you for that.
Remarks by U.S.
Ambassador Jendayi Frazer at the Youth Development Trust--SmartCity Tshwane Launch Innovation Hub, June 14, 2005
June 14, 2005: It is a great pleasure to be here at Africa’s first innovation hub with so many partners
wishing to build a positive future for and with South Africa’s young adults.
Opening of South African International Business Linkages (SAIBL), Cape Town
Regional Office, Remarks by Denise Rollins, Deputy Director, United States
Agency for International Development (USAID), May 12, 2005
May 12, 2005: It is a great pleasure to
be here with you to celebrate the opening of the newest branch of the South
African International Business Linkages program (known as “SAIBL”) that USAID
funds in the Cape of Good Hope. I’ll let you in on a little secret -- SAIBL is
one of my favorite projects because I love to see the passion on the faces of
entrepreneurs as they talk about their products, how they got into the business
and about their dreams for the future. I love the fact that USAID is able to
help make these dreams come true. Stimulating business and trade is a highly
effective and sustainable approach to assisting economies worldwide.
Launch of the Local
Governance Support Program (LGSP), Assistance to 23 Municipalities, U.S. Agency
for International Development (USAID), Denise Rollins, Acting

our support for “Project Consolidate”. This South African Government initiative will equip municipal Governments to plan for and provide better basic services and improve local economic development.
Project Consolidate was launched six months ago. USAID has been working
intensively with the Department of Provincial and Local Government to ensure
that our programs are in alignment.
