Title: |
Drifting buoy equipment development

Abstract: |
Development of low cost expendable drifting buoys for use in conjunction with TWERLE RAMS on Nimbus 6 is addressed. The initial concept was for use with a drogue for measuring ocean currents. This concept was expanded to include measurement of other oceanographic and meteorological parameters including wind speed, barometric pressure, air temperature, sea surface temperature, and water temperature at depths from 5 to 100 m. The buoy was made up of a low-cost spar hull, a BTT, a UHF antenna, a battery supply, and a minimal sensor site. By the end of 1976, over 200 BTT platforms had been deployed. A summary of the reliability analysis of all known buoy deployments from Nimbus 6 launch through December 15, 1976, is given. The confidence factor represents the probability that 75 percent of randomly selected units will have a value of MTTF equal to or greater than the value indicated.
