In 1767, Spain placed the islands under the control of the Captain General at Buenos Aires. While Spain recognized English claims to the islands in 1771, a year after they had expelled the English, the English voluntarily left the islands in 1774. GUADELOUPE

437. Carte Générale des Isles Guadeloupe et Grande Terre, ou Sont Désignées tous les Postes Supérieur et ceux Susceptible detre Fortifié,... Capt. Mallet. 1796. 1 map on 2 sheets (incomplete). Colored pen-and-ink ms., on 2 sheets, upper sheet 96 1/2 x 147 cm., lower sheet 91 1/2 x 145 cm.

This detailed, well-executed, and incomplete French military map of portions of Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre Islands of Guadeloupe includes coastline, coastal features, anchorages, navigational hazards, existing fortifications and sites proposed as fortifications, roads, streams and other bodies of water, settlements and towns, individual land holdings, names of selected landholders, and pictorial representation of relief and vegetation. Map includes an extensive keyed legend to fortifications and proposed sites for fortification with notes. In 1793, British occupiers of Guadeloupe were forced to leave the islands by a superior force of pro-Revolution French under the leadership of Victor Hugues, a radical French commissioner. He freed the slaves in the name of the French Revolution and dealt with the white planters in a vindictive manner. With this turn of events, French planters on the islands probably considered asking the British to return. This map, perhaps related to that proposal, evidently served as a presentation piece to the British. It is dedicated "A son Excellance Sir Ralph Abercromby Chevalier de L'ordre du Bain, Lieutenant General et Commandant En chef les Troupes de Sa Mayesté Britanique aux Indes Occidental &c".
