ANNOUNCEMENTS

GRANT PROGRAM FOR COOPERATION WITH EGYPT

OIAA has information about a grant program to support cooperative scientific and technological activities between researchers in the U.S. and those in Egypt. The objectives of the program are to help the U.S. and Egypt utilize science and apply technology by providing opportunities to exchange ideas, information, skills, and techniques and to collaborate on scientific and technological endeavors of mutual interest. These small grants will support add on costs of establishing bilateral cooperative linkages with researchers in Egypt. The funding may not be used as the primary source of funds for domestic activities in either country. The deadline for Proposals is December 1, 1997. Copies of the Program Announcement are available in OIAA, Administration Building, Room A511.

MEETINGS AT NIST

PATTERNS IN WORDS

Andrew M Odlyzko
Head of Mathematics & Cryptography Research Department - AT&T Labs - Murray Hill, NJ

WEDNESDAY, August 27, 1997, 10:00AM Conference Room 152, NIST North.

Counting words that satisfy various restrictions on subwords (blocks of consecutive symbols) is an extremely rich subject. There are various applications to comma-free codes, games, pattern matching, and other subjects. The main tools that are used come from generating functioned and probability theory.

NBS: THE WAY WE WERE

Jacob Rabinow
NIST Inventor Laureate

FRIDAY, September 5, 1997, 10:30AM Red Auditorium, Administration Building.

Before we all forget how it used to be, and for those of us who never knew how it was, "Jake" Rabinow, NBS '38, offers an anecdotal history of the National Bureau of Standards from 1938-1975. The quiet life of a pre-war Washington was reflected in the quiet and polite work of NBS. The crazy, disorganized, and wonderfully efficient work of the Ordnance group during the war led to rich and diversified technologies at the end of hostilities. This was followed by the darkening clouds of the early 50s....
