The categories of airports are:

M-Major

International airports of entry and departure where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are carried out, and which are open to scheduled and nonscheduled flights.

R-Restricted

International airports of entry and departure at which the formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are made available on a restricted basis, to flights with prior approval only.

A-Alternate

International airports specified in the flight plan to which a flight may proceed when it becomes inadvisable to land at the airport of intended landing.

N-Nonscheduled

International airports at which approval may be granted, provided the prescribed prior notice is given, for international nonscheduled flights only; no other form of international operation is permitted.

E-External

International airports of entry and departure for international air traffic located in an administered territory, where all formalities incident to Customs, Immigration, Health and similar procedures are available.

2. Further Entry Requirements

     1. Private and nonscheduled commercial aircraft need not obtain prior permission to overfly or land for noncommercial purposes; however, a flight plan must be on file with ATC.

     2. Nonscheduled commercial aircraft landing for commercial purposes must obtain prior permission from the Department of Tourism, Transport and Communications, Civil Aviation Division 1, Kildare Street, Dublin 2, Ireland (Telegraphic Address: CIVILAIR DUBLIN; Telephone: 01 789522; Telex: 91806; Fax (01) 763455 or 763350) at least 60 days prior to departure in the case of passenger charter series, and at least 3 working days prior to departure in the case of ad-hoc flights. All requests for traffic rights must include:

       a. Name and address of aircraft operator and charterer.

       b. Aircraft type and registration marks.

       c. Dates, times, and airports of arrival and departure.

       d. Complete route of flight.

       e. Number of passengers and type and amount of cargo.

       f. Copy of current certificate of competency.

       g. Copy of current certificate of insurance.

       h. Signed copy of charter contract between aircraft operator and charterer.

         NOTE- In case of sole-use or own-use charter, h above may be satisfied by the provision of a sole-use charter declaration.

     3. Carriage of munitions of war; i.e., weapons and ammunition designed for use in warfare including parts of or for such weapons and ammunition, is forbidden under Irish law. Other dangerous goods may be carried in accordance with the ICAO technical instructions for the safe transport of dangerous goods by air (DOC 9384-AN/905) and its supplements or with permission from the Department of Tourism and Transport and in accordance with any conditions to which such permission may be subject.      4. Passport required. Tourists are not required to obtain visas for stays less than 90 days, but may be asked to show onward/return ticket.
