Surface impoundments include natural topographic depressions, man-made excavations and diked areas formed primarily of earthen materials (although some may be lined with man-made materials), and which hold liquid wastes or wastes containing free liquids. These uncovered areas are commonly used to volatilize and/or settle materials.
