788 MONTHLY WEATHER REVIEW. MAY, 1912 C~LIMATOLOGIC'AL DATA FOR &4Y, 1912. DISTRICT NO. 12, COLUMBIA VALLEY. EDWARD A. BEALS, Dihtrict Editor. THEODORE F. DRAKE, Acting District Editor. May in this district was a nearly normnl month, both a9 to temperature and iiioisture. Although niiiiiiiiuni temperatures were generally lower than usunl and frosts formed in many sections on several dates, no reported damage occurred, as vegetation and fruit were too far advanced to be seriously injured except by estreine cold weather. I n portions of western Oregon, however, some damage was done in April to prunes, plums, and apples by frost cluring the blossoming period, sncl in the Stuck River Vnlley of western Wnshingt80n t8he cloucly, stormy weather a t the beginning of May interfered with the pollenizntion of late currants and cherries, so they are not well set. Transportation was not nirtterictlly interfered with during the month, and construction roceedecl without much interruption. At) the close work o F the month the outlook froni an aqricaltwal nncl horticultural standpoint is much more favornlde tdinn it has been for a great many yenrs. Especially is t81iis true of sections to eastward of tlie Cascttcle Mountains, where there is usually less pre~ipitttt~ion tlinn has occurred this spring. TEMPERATURE. The average tfmperature, as determined from 259 stations, was 54.6', or 0.5' above the normal. The weather averaged wttrnier than usual in the western por- tion of the district and colder tlinn usual in the enstern portion. Only at a few stations wits the inonthly mean temperature below 50'. The weather R I ~S warmest during the iiiiclclle of tlie second and the last half of the third decade, rnasiniirm temperatures generally occurring froin tlie 13th to 17t8h and on the 29th. The coldest weather, as a rule, occurrPd during the first, week, and niinimuiii tt.mperatures were recorded princi.p:tlly during the first four days of the month. The highest nieitii temperatmure w'ns 64' at, Blalock, Oreg., and tlie lowest was 3S.S0, a t Snake River, in 17ellowstone Park, Wyo. The highest temperature recorded mitli thermometers exposed in a standard instrument, shelter was 9S0, a t Hood River, Oreg., on tlie I-Cth, and the lowest was 12', at Moran, Wyo., on the Zd, and at Pierson, Iclaho, on the 3d. PRECIPITATION. The average precipit, ation, as cleterniinecl froin the records of 376 stittions, was 3.37 inches, or 0.05 inch above the normal. The rainfall was deficient in western Wztsli- ington, nortliwestern Oregon, northern and portions of southeastern Idnho, and northwestern Montnnn, niid the greatest excesses, as a rule, were in central and interior southwestern Oregon, southeastern Washington, west- central Idaho, nncl soutliwmtern hlontnna. There were two well-defined rttiny periods, the 1st to 6th and tlie 19th to 30th; only local showers occurred during the intervening periocl. Tlie geittest montldy amount recorded wits 10.03 inches, a t Happy Honie, Oreg.., in the Umpcua drainage area, and the least was 0.12 inch, at Lost t'reek, Wwli., in the Columbia drainage basin. Tlie greatest 24-liour rainfall reported was 2.22 inches on t8he SOtli, at Scdro Woolley, Wash., in the Puget Sound drain- nge area. Some snow fell in elevated sections, principally in the c.strcnie east, erri portion of the district, tlie greatest monthly amount being 27 inches a t Musick, Oreg., in the TJinpqua drainage area. THE RIVERS. The Columhia River rose steaclil during the month ant1 :tverngecl slightly below normal Its lowest stages n t Vancouver nnd Uinatilla occurred on the 1st aiid were S.6 feet and 9.8 feet, respectively. The highest stages a t these stiltions occurred on the 31st, and were 19.4 feet and 20 feet, respectively. The water reached 32.3 feet at Tlie Dalles 011 the 31st. This is a high stage for boats of the present ower capacity, but as light loads were carried the regu F ar schedule was being adhered to rtt tlie close of the month. - The Willamette River averaged 0.S foot above normal. At Portland it aver:?ged 6.9 feet higher tlian during April, clue to the annual rise in the Coliunbia, but in its micldle ttncl upper courses it was only about a foot above its nveritge stages for April. It reached flood stage, 15 feet, a t Portland on the 20th, and remained above until tlie 31st, when its highest stage for tlie month, 19.1 feet, wits rcwhed. Warnings were sent to shippers in advance of the rise, and wharves were cleared in due time to prevent injury from hizh wnter. The Snake River averngetl 1.2 feet above normal, and the highest stage reported was 15.9 feet a t Lewiston on the 30th. Its lowest stages were reached on the 7th tit Ripnrin and Lewiston, and on the 8th at Weiser. MISCELLANEOUS PHENOMENA. It is reported that tlie light- ning killed some live stock and struck some trees in this vicinity. Light frosts were of general occurrence on the Bth, loth, and 23d. They occurred a t vnsious eleva- tions, ranging from a few feet in some instances to several liunclrecl feet in the central plateau of the district. Heavy frosts formed in eastern Oregon, and quite gener- ally in parts of Idnho and Montana. Little if any clam- age has been done to the fruit blossoms or to the growing crops. Wind velocities were relatively light and the sun- shine arid cloucliness tzbou t normal. Cooperative observ- ers in practically all sections report good growing weather.
