This is the report of a roundtable whose objectives were to share information about programs and policies that impact prescription drug use among the elderly, develop linkages among departments that share common target populations, and explore ways in which current programs and policies can be strengthened. |
| Abstract:
|
At the roundtable, 29 surveys were received from 12 departments. The surveys showed that the departments' efforts have been predominantly preventive, in that they have been generally directed toward preventing medication misuse or abuse among a targeted population. The roundtable established three working groups that yielded a composite statement on prescription medication misuse among the elderly. The statement included an acknowledgment of the extent and severity of the problem and a recommendation that a central agency take the lead in acting on roundtable considerations and continuing its work. The policy statement also expressed a commitment to develop and strengthen public/private linkages, specifically inclusion of private organizations such as the American Association of Retired Persons and pharmaceutical companies. It also encourages a philosophy that emphasizes wellness and self-advocacy among the elderly. Appended survey information, along with information and resource listings |
