Name
THEMIS-A: On Board moments: ESA and SST Electron/Ion moments, density, flux, velocity, pressure and temperature.
Alternate name
THEMIS-A MOM
Description

THEMIS-A On Board moments. On board data outputs include number density, particle flux, energy flux, and a six component symetric momentum flux tensor. Other moments are calculated from these partial moments on the ground adding total pressure, velocity, plasma temperature (measured as a three dimensional energy vector), and a six component symetric pressure tensor to the list of data products. Number density and total pressure are scalar outputs. Velocity is calculated in DSL, GSE, GSM, and MFA coordinates (coordinate descriptions are listed below in Table 1). Magnetic Field Aligned pressure tensor and temperature are calculated as well. All quantities are calculated for both ions and electrons from a combination of ESA and SST data. Moments data are taken at spin resolution in all ESA survey modes except burst. The spacecraft potential, as measure by the EFI, is used to correct for spacecraft charging by shifting the particle energies for calculation; this eliminates contamination from photo-electrons. Also, weighting factors are used to account for instrument specific energy and angle efficiency variations.

Table 1: Coordinate Descriptions.

Despun Sun - L-vector (DSL): Z-axis points towards the spin axis, the Y-axis is obtained from the cross product of Z and the Spacecraft-Sun direction as viewed from the probe. The X-axis sits in the Z-axis-Sun plane and completes a right handed system. Geocentric Solar Ecliptic (GSE): Z-axis is normal to the solar ecliptic, the X-axis points from earth towards the Sun, and Y complets a right handed system. Geocentric solar Magnetosphereic (GSM): X-axis points from Earth to the Sun, the Y-axis is orthogonal to the Earth's magnetic dipole and points towards the dusk side, and the X-Z plane contains the dipole axis. Magnetic Field Aligned (MFA): Z-axis points along magnetic field lines, the Y-axis is the orthonormal cross product of the Z-axis and a vector pointing towards the Sun, and the X-axis completes the right handed system.

Caveats

Due to bit errors and data misdirection, ESA data (including moments) before April 27, 2007 should be considered dubious. Other data loss and formatting errors in the moments calculations and the ETC were not corrected until Aug. 6, 2007. Potential data from the EFI was not properly included in calculations between Nov. 18-22, 2007. EFI booms on THEMIS-A were not deployed until Jan. 14, 2008, 17:00:00 UT. Moments data before this date is suspect to error from photoelectrons and spacecraft charging.

Name
THEMIS-A: On Board moments: ESA and SST Electron/Ion moments density, flux, velocity, pressure and temperature.
Alternate name
THEMIS-A MOM
Description

THEMIS-A: The On Board Moments (MOM) system, part of the Instrument Data Processing Unit (IDPU), is used for on board calculations of electron and ion moments from a combination of ESA and SST data. On board data outputs include number density, number and energy flux, and a six component symetric momentum flux tensor. Total pressure, velocity, plasma temperature, and momentum flux are calculated on the ground via a combination of the other partial moments. Velocity is calculated in DSL, GSE, GSM, and MFA coordinates (coordinate descriptions are listed below in Table 1). Pressure and temperature are also calculated in MFA coordinates. All quantities are calculated for both ions and electrons. Moments data is taken at spin resolution in all ESA survey modes except burst. The spacecraft potential, as measure by the EFI, is used to correct for spacecraft charging, thereby eliminating contamination from photo-electrons. Other corrections are made for instrument specific efficiency variations.

Table 1: Coordinate Descriptions.

Other data loss and formatting errors in the moments calculations and ETC were not corrected until Aug. 6, 2007. Potential data from the EFI was not properly included in calculations between Nov. 18-22, 2007. EFI booms on THEMIS-A were not deployed until Jan. 14, 2008, 17:00:00 UT. Moments data before this date is suspect to error due to photoelectrons and spacecraft charging.

Description

The Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) mission is a five-satellite Explorer mission whose primary objective is to understand the onset and macroscale evolution of magnetospheric substorms. Most importantly, THEMIS will find out which magnetotail process is responsible for substorm onset: (a) a local disruption of the plasma sheet current; or, (b) that current's interaction with the rapid influx of plasma emanating from lobe flux annihilation at ~25Re. Three inner probes at ~10Re will monitor current disruption onset, while two outer probes, at 20 and 30Re respectively, will remotely monitor plasma acceleration due to lobe flux dissipation. The five small satellites were launched together on a Delta II rocket and they carry identical sets of instruments including an electric field instrument (EFI), a flux gate magnetometer (FGM), a search coil magnetometer (SCM), a electro-static analyzer, and solid state telescopes (SST). The mission consists of several phases. In the first phase, the spacecraft will all orbit as a tight cluster in the same orbital plane with apogee at 15.4 Earth radii (RE). In the second phase, also called the Dawn Phase, the satellites will be placed in their orbits and during this time their apogees will be on the dawn side of the magnetosphere. During the third phase (also known as the Tail Science Phase) the apogees will be in the magnetotail. The fourth phase is called the Dusk Phase or Radiation Belt Science Phase, with all apogees on the dusk side. In the fifth and final phase, the apogees will shift to the sunward side (Dayside Science Phase).

All five satellites will have similar perigee altitudes (1.16-1.5 Re) but varying apogee altitudes (P1: ~30 RE, P2: ~20 RE, P3 & P4: ~12 RE, P5: ~10RE) with corresponding orbital periods of ~4, 2, and 1 days, respectively. This results in multi-point magnetic conjunctions. Every four days the satellites will line up along the Earth's magnetic tail with magnetic foot points in the North American sector, allowing the tracking of disturbances through different geospace regions from tail to ground.

The satellite data will be combined with observations of the aurora from a network of 20 ground observatories (all sky imagers, magnetometers) across the North American continent. In addition to its primary goal, THEMIS will answer critical questions in radiation belt physics and solar wind - magnetosphere energy coupling. THEMIS is complementary to MMS in terms of the temporal and spatial scales of the phenomena observed by these two constellation missions. THEMIS's focus is macroscale, whereas MMS will observe micro/meso scale features.
