1. OPERATIONS UPDATE
(contact: rmmiller@lbl.gov)

Beam availability for the last two weeks was 87.8% overall and 89.1% for user shifts. Causes of lost beamtime included problems with the transverse feedback system (repairs made, further tests planned during accelerator physics time), software problems in switching from injection corrector magnet settings to production settings (fixed), and a vacuum leak at Beamline 9.0.1's personnel safety shutter 1 (repaired). See below for a report on repairs to sector 8's undulator.

Operations Summary for October 2 - October 21

Oct 02, 00:00-08:00 User scrubbing & special operations (1.9-GeV/260-mA/320-bunch user operations) Oct 02, 08:00- Oct 07, 07:15 1.5-GeV/400-mA/320-bunch user operations Oct 07, 07:30-24:00 Maintenance & startup Oct 08, 00:00-24:00 Accelerator physics Oct 09, 00:00-08:00 User scrubbing & special operations Oct 09, 08:00- Oct 14, 07:15 1.5-GeV/400-mA/320-bunch user operations Oct 14, 07:30-24:00 Maintenance & startup Oct 15, 00:00-24:00 Accelerator physics Oct 16, 00:00-08:00 User scrubbing & special operations Oct 16, 08:00- Oct 21, 07:15 1.9-GeV/260-mA/320-bunch user operations

Weekly operations scheduling meetings: Fridays at 3:30 p.m. in the Building 6 conference room. The Accelerator Status Hotline at (510) 486-6766 (ext. 6766 from Lab phones) features a recorded message giving up-to-date information on the operational status of the accelerator.

** SECTOR 8 UNDULATOR DRIVE SYSTEM ROLLING AGAIN **
The sector 8 undulator's drive mechanism is rolling smoothly again, thanks to the efforts of the ALS Insertion Device Group. The anticipated two-day shutdown for removing a jammed roller screw and adjusting the undulator to operate safely without it was avoided entirely when technicians successfully freed the jammed screw with oil. Some moving parts within the roller screw had become pitted, and the grease had dried, making it possible for surfaces that normally roll smoothly to lock together. Technicians removed the screw assembly from the undulator, disassembled it, polished and lubricated it, added a grease fitting (to speed any future lubrication), and replaced it in the undulator. The seven other roller screws in the drive mechanism were also inspected and lubricated; no other problems were found. The entire operation was carried out during regularly scheduled maintenance time without disturbing the undulator's alignment. User operations resumed on Wednesday, September 25, a full day ahead of the original schedule, as the Accelerator Physics Group ceded its unexpectedly recovered day to users.

Though undulator roller screws are designed to last the life of the undulator, we have already begun taking precautionary steps to avoid similar problems in the future. The sector 7 undulator's roller screws were inspected two weeks ago, and no problems were identified. During the September 30 maintenance period, all other moving parts in the sector 7 undulator's drive mechanism received preventive lubrication. To keep all our undulators rolling along, we will add a maintenance cycle for insertion devices to our regular accelerator maintenance tasks.

2. USERS' MEETING REGISTRATION FEES REDUCED, DEADLINE EXTENDED
(contact: alsuser@lbl.gov)

If you're considering attending the ALS Users' Association Annual Meeting on October 21-22, we have good news! First, Jeff Bokor (Users' Executive Committee chair) and ALS management have reviewed the meeting budget and announced a reduction in registration fees as follows: $120 regular fee, $70 student fee. Both fees include the banquet to be held Monday evening, October 21. If you have already sent in your registration by check, you will be reimbursed on site. If you paid by credit card, only the appropriate amount will be charged. Please let us know if you are a student when you register.

Second, the deadline for advance registration has been extended to October 11. You may also register at the meeting if you wish. To request a registration form, send an email message to alsuser@lbl.gov with your name, fax number, and complete mailing address, and put "Request User Meeting Registration" in the subject line.

3. USERS' MEETING AGENDA AND UPDATES
(contact: alsuser@lbl.gov) The Annual Meeting of the ALS Users' Association will take place October 21-22. Jeff Bokor, chair of the ALS Users' Executive Committee, is the organizer for the meeting. Below you will find an agenda of the speakers for the meeting and a list workshops to be held the following day. One news brief: the new ALS T-shirts, with Annette Greiner's winning design, will be free to all registrants this year.
