Swanton, Vermont- On June 20, 2005, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Border Patrol agents assigned to the Champlain, New York Station of the Swanton Sector seized over 261 pounds of Ecstasy valued at over $14,262,000 in Mooers Corner, New York.

Agents responded to an electronic intrusion device indicating an illegal entry from Canada and observed a vehicle in the location of the activity. Agents performed a vehicle stop on a black Dodge pickup driven by a Canadian national. A Border Patrol Canine Team conducted a non-intrusive, free air sniff on the vehicle. The canine alerted to the vehicle and the agents discovered the contraband.

“The Border Patrol agents of the Swanton Sector are committed to preserving the integrity of our borders,” stated Chief Patrol Agent Stanley U. Spencer. “This is an outstanding example of our working relationship with all area law enforcement at the local, state and federal agency level.”

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was contacted and as a result of further investigation another individual was also arrested in possession of 16 kilograms of cocaine. The case is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office-Northern District of New York. A multi-agency investigation will be continuing.

Fiscal year to date, (October 1, 2004 – June 23, 2005), the Swanton Sector has seized 4,067 pounds of marijuana, 291 pounds of Ecstasy and $1,467,000.00 in U.S. currency.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control, and protection of our Nation’s borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
