The perfect place
Port Baudette, Minnesota

How would you like to live where there is no crime, abundant wildlife, and everyone knows your name? A few lucky Customs officers do, and they know what it's like to live in a beautiful small town where you can still sleep with your front door open and there are no stoplights.

There's no rush hour traffic in this town, no long store lines, but there are a lot of people who are just plain down to earth. It may sound like Mayberry on the Andy Griffith Show but it's actually a town called Baudette, Minn.—a place where Customs personnel stationed near the US-Canada border have all the modern amenities of life without the hassles.

It is nothing for Customs officers at this port to see moose, bear, elk, and birdlife on a regular basis. Customs Inspector Dave Evans describes Baudette, "as the perfect place to work, raise children, vacation, and live comfortably." Baudette has a population of 4000 residents, and its main tourism comes from hunting and fishing. Baudette is connected to one of the largest lakes in the U.S., the Lake of the Woods with 65,000 miles of shoreline and 14,000 islands. So grab a fishing pole, and relax.
