Press Release of Senator Boxer

South San Francisco Bay Salt Ponds Approved By Senate Committee

Federal support for project included in water resources bill

Friday, June 25, 2004

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) this week announced that the Senate legislation reauthorizing the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) includes authorization for a feasibility study of flood protection and restoration of the South San Francisco Bay Salt Ponds. The bill was approved by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, of which Senator Boxer is a member.

"This project will help restore this important San Francisco Bay habitat," said Boxer. "I am so pleased that the committee approved these projects."

Boxer’s proposal authorizes a study to determine the feasibility of a flood protection project and the restoration of the 15,100 acres of the South San Francisco Bay Salt Ponds. The Project represents an unprecedented opportunity to restore the health of San Francisco Bay.

WRDA authorizes water supply, flood control, port improvement, and environmental restoration projects across the country. The bill now goes to the full Senate for consideration. The House passed the legislation 412 to 8.
