Abstract This article describes the elements and installation of a photodetector sensor system for traffic surveillance applications. Overhead infrared vehicle sensors are designed and tested. The system detects moving and stationary vehicles depending on the amount of reflected power received by the sensor. The results reveal that the signal-to-noise ratio exceeds the minimum value, which is necessary to distinguish between the reflected signal from the roadway and the surface of a vehicle. In addition, the overhead infrared active-laser vehicle detector system is capable of operating under all weather conditions.
