Gayle’s Chocolate Recalls Sugar Free Chocolate Covered Peanuts Sold In-Store and at Detroit Metro Airport Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --Royal Oak, MI -- February 13, 2009 --- Gayle’s Chocolates of Royal Oak, MI is recalling 48 - 10 oz boxes of sugar free chocolate covered peanuts packaged under the name of Gayle’s Chocolates, because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Product was sold at retail in Gayle’s Chocolates store in Royal Oak, MI and in two stores at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Product is labeled as Gayle’s Chocolate Sugar Free Chocolate Covered Peanuts, net wt 10 oz., Gayle’s Chocolate, Royal Oak, MI. UPC 3447803065.

Gayle’s has received no complaints of illness to date and all product has been pulled from store shelves and destroyed.

Gayle’s Chocolates was informed by their vendor for sugar free product, Albanese Nut Company that they had purchased peanuts from PCA.

Any person that purchased 1 10 oz. package of Gayle’s Chocolates sugar free chocolate covered peanuts is urged to destroy them, or to return them for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the Gayle’s Chocolates at 1-248-398-0001. More information on peanut related products being recalled is available on the website www.michigan.gov/mda.
