But all of the new "named" postdoctoral fellowships are named for men, including George Beadle, Arthur Holly Compton, Ugo Fano, Nick Metropolis, Willard Libby, Glenn Seaborg, Harold Urey, Eugene Wigner, and Walter Zinn. (The already existing "named" fellowships include the Maria Goeppert Meyer fellowship as well as the Enrico Fermi fellowship.) Are women scientists who have had some connection with Argonne so scarce that we can't find a single one to name any of the new fellowships after? I don't think so. I propose that under the circumstances we should request that Argonne promptly supplement this set of new fellowships with at least one additional new fellowship named specifically for a prominent woman scientist.
