MEMORANDUM FOR: Distribution E

FROM: John H. Ward
                  Chief, Production Management Branch

SUBJECT: Changes to the NWS Production Suite

The implementation of the T254 Global Forecast System
originally scheduled for Tuesday, 13 August has been postponed.
A new date for the implementation has not as yet been determined,
but as a minimum, a new 30-day notice will be provided prior to
implementation.

The transition to the next NCEP Central Computer System
(CCS) began on 15 July, on a small, single node test system.
Production Management Branch (PMB) has begun to move all
operational codes and scripts to the test system and perform an
initial recompile and test of the operational codes. Individual
programmers will only be contacted if problems are encountered
during these initial tests. Production codes have not been
frozen. In October, half of the CCS will be installed in the IBM
Gaithersburg facility. At that time, all operational codes will
be frozen while PMB establishes parallel operations on the CCS.
The moratorium on changes to the production suite can be expected
to extend at least through the normal holiday moratorium period.
Users should have their JIF's submitted to PMB by the first part
of September if they want them implemented before the moratorium
begins. More details on the transition and moratorium will be
provided as they become available.

Items 622 through 626 were implemented at 12Z on Tuesday, 30
July. The data cards, which are used to generate 00-60 hour
products from the post processing of Eta output, were withdrawn
because of a problem with the assigned WMO Headers. The problem
has been corrected and the data cards are scheduled for
implementation at 12Z on Tuesday, 6 August (see items 644 through
648 below).

A list of the major model implementations planned for 2002
can be found at:

As additional information about each implementation becomes
available, links will be added on the change summary page.

The following crisis items were implemented this past week:

     629. SCRIPT - IBM Jobs 820, 850. (Marchok, NP22). Script
relocate_extrkr.sh is part of the analysis package for the GFS
system. The script executes the tropical cyclone tracking
program, which finds tropical storms in the GFS guess fields so
that those storms can be relocated to the correct positions. The
script has been modified to correct the date for the current
cycle, which is used by two executables called from this script.
Also, the script has been modified so that the date from 6 hours
prior is now fed into those executables. Done at 12Z on 30 July.

     630. SCRIPT - IBM Jobs 615, 625, 635. (Sager, NP12).
Script expltwafs.sh creates WAFS wind/temperature graphics. In
order to stabilize the transmission of the new series of AVN
background "m" charts, this script has been modified to send
these charts in 6-bit instead of the g3/fax format to the
communications gateway. Done at 12Z on 1 August.

The following unadvertised items were implemented this past
week in preparation for the GFS T245 implementation:

     631. SMS - IBM Job TRANSFER_GFSMISC. (Lin, NP11). New
SMS script, definition file, and man page were added to transfer
FOG, SICE, VAFTAD, and RSM data from the primary to the backup
IBM SP. Done at 12Z on 25 July.

     632. SMS - IBM Job NWGESGFS. (Lin, NP11). New SMS script,
definition file, and man page were added to transfer the AVN,
ENS, RSM, and VAFTAD guess data between the primary and the
backup IBM SP. Done at 12Z on 25 July.

     633. SMS - IBM Job NWGESEDAS. (Lin, NP11). New SMS
script, definition file, and man page were added to transfer EDAS
guess data between the primary and the backup IBM SP. Done at
12Z on 25 July.

     634. SMS - IBM Job TRANSFER_NGM. (Lin, NP11). New SMS
script, definition file, and man page were added to transfer NGM
model data between the primary and the backup IBM SP. Done at
12Z on 25 July.

     635. SMS - IBM Jobs TRANSFER_NWGES, TRANSFER_NAWIPS. (Lin,
NP11). These jobs which transfer data between the primary and
the backup IBM SP have been deleted from the SMS graph. Done at
12Z on 25 July.

     636. SMS - IBM Job NWGESMIC. (Lin, NP11). New SMS script,
definition file, and man page were added to transfer the FNL,
MRF, SREF, RUCS, RUC2, HPSPLIT, WSR, and PARA guess data from the
primary to the backup IBM SP. Done at 12Z on 25 July.

     637. SMS - IBM Job NWGESMESO. (Lin, NP11). New SMS
script, definition file, and man page were added to transfer the
MESO NWGES guess data between the primary and the backup IBM SP.
Done at 12Z on 25 July.

     638. SCRIPT - Many IBM Jobs. (Lin, NP11). Script
JTRANSFER_NWGES.sms.prod transfers the guess files between the
primary and the backup IBM SP. The script has been modified so
that it can transfer the guess files according to the
specification of the parm file. Done at 12Z on 25 July.

     639. DATACARDS - Many IBM Jobs. (Lin, NP11). These data
cards transfer the data directories between the primary and the
backup IBM SP. The data cards have been modified in preparation
for the T254 implementation. Done at 12Z on 25 July.

The following unadvertised items were implemented this past
week to transition production data ingested from the NESDIS ftp
server duc6 to gp12:

     640. SCRIPT - IBM Job ISND. (Keyser, NP22). Job script
JISND.sms.prod initiates the jobs that ingest GOES sounding,
retrieval, cloud top and radiance data into the BUFR /dcom
database on the IBM SP. Since NESDIS is retiring the duc6 ftp
server, the script has been modified to copy files from the
NESDIS UNIX machine gp12 rather than from duc6. The files on
gp12 mirror those on duc6. Done at 12Z on 30 July.

     641. SCRIPT - IBM Job ISWD. (Keyser, NP22). Job script
JISWD.sms.prod initiates the jobs that ingest NESDIS
satellite-derived wind data into the BUFR /dcom database on the
IBM SP. Since NESDIS is retiring the duc6 ftp server, the script
has been modified to copy files from the NESDIS UNIX machine gp12
rather than from duc6. The files on gp12 mirror those on duc6.
Done at 12Z on 30 July.

     642. SCRIPT - IBM Job ISNOW. (Keyser, NP22). Job script
JISNOW.sms.prod initiates the jobs that ingest daily NESDIS snow
cover GRIB data and USAF gridded snow depth analyses into the
/dcom database on the IBM SP. Since NESDIS is retiring the duc6
ftp server, the script has been modified to copy files from the
NESDIS UNIX machine gp12 rather than from duc6. The files on
gp12 mirror those on duc6. Done at 12Z on 30 July.

     643. SCRIPT - IBM Job RUC2A_DUMP. (Keyser, NP22). Job
script JRUC2A_DUMP.sms.prod performs the hourly RUC2A (early)
network observational data dumping from the BUFR /dcom database
on the IBM SP. It also contains a step to ingest GOES sounding,
retrieval, cloud top and radiance data immediately into the BUFR
/dcom database on the IBM SP and prior to the dumping of all
observational data in this network. Since NESDIS is retiring the
duc6 ftp server, the satellite ingest step in the script has been
modified to copy files from the NESDIS UNIX machine gp12 rather
than from duc6. The files on gp12 mirror those on duc6. Done at
12Z on 30 July.

The following items will be implemented at 12Z on Tuesday, 6
August:

     644. DATACARDS - IBM Job 242. (Manikin, NP22). These data
cards are used for 00-12 hour wmogrib processing of Eta output on
Alaskan 40 km grid 216. The data cards are being updated to add
five new fields.

     645. DATACARDS - IBM Job 244. (Manikin, NP22). These data
cards are used for 15-24 hour processing of Eta output on Alaskan
40 km grid 216. The data cards are being updated to add five new
fields.

     646. DATACARDS - IBM Job 246. (Manikin, NP22). These data
cards perform 27-36 hour wmogrib processing of Eta output on 40
km Alaskan grid 216. The data cards are being updated to add
five new fields.

     647. DATACARDS - IBM Job 248. (Manikin, NP22). These data
cards perform 39-48 hour wmogrib processing of Eta output on 40
km Alaskan grid 216. The data cards are being updated to add
five new fields.

     648. DATACARDS - IBM Job 250. (Manikin, NP22). These data
cards perform 51-60 hour wmogrib processing of Eta output on 40
km Alaskan grid 216. The data cards are being updated to add
five new fields.

     649. RFCMXMN - IBM Jobs 380, 950. (Cosgrove, OST22). This
program was previously used to create forecast bulletins
containing MOS temperature guidance in SHEF format for the RFCs.
The program is being replaced by an updated version and is no
longer used. Therefore, this program is being removed from
operations.

     650. DATACARDS - IBM Jobs 380, 950, AVNMOS_(00,06,12,18),
MRFMOS_00. (Cosgrove, OST22). These data cards
tdl_drrfcmxmn.dat and tdl_mos2grd1081.tbl were previously used in
some operational jobs, but are now obsolete and are being removed
from production.

     651. SREF_ETA_FCST - IBM Jobs jsref_eta_fcst_ctl (n1, p1,
n2, p2). (Du, NP2). This program is the 48 km Eta SREF forecast
model which runs out to 63 hours. The program is being modified
to prevent the model from creating small negative precipitation
amounts which cause floating point exceptions.

     652. PLOTWAFP - IBM Jobs 615, 625, 635. (Sager, NP12).
This program creates a set of polar stereo graphic
wind/temperature charts for the World Aviation Forecast System
(WAFS). These charts display forecasts of winds and temperatures
for use by the International Aviation Community. This program is
being modified to adjust the display area of the mid-pacific
charts to the ICAO standard.

The following item will be implemented at 15Z on Tuesday, 6
August:

     653. DCALPS - IBM Job PQACT. (Hollern, NP12). This new
decoder will process data files received directly via DBNet from
the NAVOCEANO Altimeter Processing System (ALPS). These files
contain tpx1, tpx2, ers2, gfoo, and gfoM satellite data
representing the sea level height deviations from the mean of the
8-year period 1993 - 2000. The data will be encoded into BUFR
and will be stored in the operational database as BUFR
type/subtypes: 031/101 (NAVOCEANO alps ers2 Altimeter High
Resolution Global); 031/102 (NAVOCEANO alps gfoo and gfoM
Altimeter High Resolution Global); 031/103 (NAVOCEANO alps tpx1
and tpx2 Altimeter High Resolution Global).
