Last-2000 year annual-to-sub-annual climate reconstructions for North America and the Northern Hemisphere. In this area I work on climate field reconstructions, developing reconstruction methods, and experimental examinations of how well the methods are working. A key current target is the use of N. American field reconstructions over the past 600 years to determine spatially-characteristic responses of the climate system to external forcing, and then exploiting these characteristic responses to: (a) identify climate model capacity to accurately simulate the regional forcing-response characteristics and (b) diagnose reasons why the models succeed or fail to accurately capture the regional signals. Finally, regionally best-performing models can then be identified for use in climate change impacts analyses, such as future drought and fire regimes in the N. American West.
Assimilation of multi-decadal to centennial pollen-derived climate information with annually-responding tree ring information and centennial to multi-centennial climate reconstructions from boreholes. In this area I am part of a project to develop Bayesian Hierarchical Modeling as a method for integration of different-frequency climate proxy information. This project has the target of last two-millennial reconstructions of average N. American surface temperatures.
Full-Holocene climate reconstructions in N. America using pollen proxy information. In this area I work on both reconstructions and developing and optimizing reconstruction methods, especially the Modern Analog Technique. A recent emphasis in this area is the development of drought variability reconstructions for mid-latitude central North America over the period 9,000-3,000 years ago.
Experimental examination of the comparative value of single-site, multiple-site, and climate field reconstructions of ENSO variability.
