Abstract The aim of outfitting wagons with Independently Rotating Wheel (IRW) systems is to increase speeds, to reduce the winding of wheel-sets as well as lateral displacement on rails, to decrease wheel and rolling surface wear, and to improve railway curve performance. Results of this study suggest that IRW systems with suitable guidance will perform better than ordinary rigid axle wheel-sets. The study also indicates that IRW systems reduce the rate of wear of trucks with a stiff plan suspension. However, the study showed that IRW systems produce an increase in the rate of wear for four-wheel wagons with a flexible primary yaw suspension. The analysis suggests that it is necessary to take the affects of different wheel profiles into account.
