China Gives Green Light to Import SARS Related Products

Ministry of Commerce. China’s Ministry of Commerce has issued a notice dated May 6, 2003 which requires the departments in charge of economic and trade affairs at different levels to cooperate closely with relevant departments to establish a "green channel" for the import of medical devices and equipment needed to fight SARS. All import procedures will be simplified and processed promptly. Medical devices and equipment that normally are imported through an international tender bidding process can be exempted from such bidding procedures if approved by departments in charge of health and medical affairs at the provincial level.

Customs. Local Custom offices in China have launched a mechanism for the quick inspection and release of goods, medical devices and drugs needed to fight SARS. Customs offices are to process these materials promptly. Customs at Capital Airport in Beijing has opened an emergency counter for preferential handling of declaration and release procedures of such goods to ensure that they reach the "front line" in the war on SARS quickly. Beijing Customs has even conducted an inspection of drugs imported by the China National Pharmaceutical Foreign Trade Corporation in the air, so they could be released upon arrival. Customs in Shanghai, Nanjing and Qingdao have also taken measures to conduct quick inspections and clearance of drugs, reagent and medical devices for use in treating SARS.
