NCI Seeks Tenured senior epidemiologist to head Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics 

The individual occupying this tenured position will have responsibility for directing an intramural and contract-supported research program to investigate the relationship between occupational and environmental exposures of human populations and cancer risk, including studies to identify carcinogenic mechanisms and gene-environment interactions. Responsibilities include overseeing the administrative management of the Branch, supervising staff members, mentoring tenure-track investigators and post-doctoral fellows, and ensuring the scientific quality of the Branch research portfolio, in addition to planning and directing a program of independent research in occupational and/or environmental epidemiology. Other duties include providing consultation to other investigators and public health officials at the national and international level, and acting as liaison with a variety of agencies and organizations seeking expertise related to epidemiologic and interdisciplinary studies of occupational and environmental exposures in the etiology of cancer and means for prevention through exposure avoidance and other interventions.

The successful candidate must hold either a doctoral degree in epidemiology or related fields or a medical degree. He or she must demonstrate knowledge of epidemiologic methods and statistical procedures as well as a proven ability: (1) to conduct high-quality original research using epidemiologic and interdisciplinary approaches to investigate the role of occupational and environmental exposures in the etiology of cancer; and (2) to publish such work in peer-reviewed scientific or medical journals and present it at scientific meetings. NIMH Seeks Tenured Schizophrenia Investigator

NIMH is recruiting for a tenured senior investigator in the Clinical Brain Disorders Branch. With a complimentary budget and staff, the individual selected for this position will be expected to establish an independent research program focused on the use of postmortem human tissue and animal models to study the neuropathology, pathophysiology, and genetics of schizophrenia. In addition, the individual will lead an effort to acquire and maintain a large collection of postmortem human brain tissue. The successful individual must possess an M.D. degree, or equivalent training, and experience in a relevant area of neuropathology, neuroscience, and neuropharmacology. Familiarity with neuropsychology, neuroscience, and molecular neurobiology is preferred. NINR Seeks Scientific Director

NINR is searching for a Scientific Director. This senior scientist will lead the intramural bio-behavioral research program. The successful candidate will lead a developing group of independent investigators conducting research in the institutes' basic, behavioral, and clinical sciences mission, and will help chart the future of a vibrant, growing nursing and bio-behavioral research community at NIH. The Scientific Director will establish a cutting-edge intramural program of investigation that applies fundamental findings to bio-behavioral mechanisms. He or she will be responsible for allocation of the research budget to lab and clinical programs, in conjunction with rigorous quadrennial review. The SD will be provided with a fully equipped new laboratory and supported by resources appropriate to the size and scope of the program. He or she may potentially recruit additional tenure-track investigators. NIAAA Seeks Head for In Vivo Neural Function Section

NIAAA is searching for a Ph.D. or M.D. independent scientist to head the Section of In Vivo Neural Function in its Laboratory for Integrative Neuroscience. Applicants should have at least 3 years postdoctoral research experience and the position will be tenure-track or tenured, depending on the level of the individual selected. Research in this section will focus on relating neuronal function to behavior. The Section Chief will establish an independent program of research including studies such as measuring neuronal firing, neuronal morphology, calcium transients, or neurotransmitter release in relation to performance of behavior tasks by rodents. The ability to apply in vivo functional measures to genetically-engineered rodents could also be an important component of research in this section. Areas of preferred research emphasis include learning and memory and neural mechanisms of addiction. NIEHS Seeks Tenured or Tenure-Track Molecular Toxicologist

The Intramural Research Program at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences is recruiting a discipline leader in molecular toxicology for a tenured or tenure-track appointment in the Laboratory of Molecular Toxicology.  The scientist selected will be expected to establish an outstanding independent research program in the molecular genetics of toxicology employing genetic model organisms with an emphasis on critical molecular targets regulating physiological responses to environmental toxicants.  The  successful applicant will also be expected to provide scientific expertise to the Environmental Toxicology Program on studies pertaining to molecular toxicity and related human health issues, including participation in study design for toxicity testing, and development of sensitive methodologies to identify and evaluate the toxicity of environmental chemicals.

Applicants should have a doctoral or equivalent degree with experience or training in molecular toxicology and demonstrated ability to establish an outstanding research program in the molecular genetics of toxicology employing large, high-throughput screens in genetic model organisms, such as C. elegans, D. rerio or Drosophila. NIAMS Seeks Scientific Director

NIAMS is seeking a scientific director who will provide strong, effective leadership in the overall scientific management of an innovative basic and clinical research program in arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin disease. The program has a budget of $50 million and a staff of 250. NIA seeks Staff Clinician for Translational Research

NCI Seeks Tenure/Tenure Track Investigator in Human Genetics

NCI is searching for an investigator or senior investigator for its Clinical Genetics Branch, Human Genetics Program, DCEG. This investigator will have postdoctoral expertise and experience in various aspects of cancer genetics. Applicants should have an M.D. with experience or training in oncology or genetics, and epidemiology. There is particular need for experience in clinical trials and, ideally, cancer chemoprevention research or a substantial interest in pharmacogenetics. NCI is seeking an experience clinical investigator to join its established, collegial, multidisciplinary human clinical cancer genetics research program. Collaboration with lab colleagues is central to its research. Current CGB protocols focus on families at increased genetic risk for breast, ovarian, or testicular cancer or one of the inherited bone marrow failure syndromes (e.g. Fanconi's anemia, dyskeratosis congenita, etc.) and pharmacogentic studies of various treatment outcomes of patients undergoing tamoxifen or adjuvant chemotherapy. The mission of the Branch is to develop evidence-based strategies for improving the quality of life and survival of persons at increased genetic risk of cancer. The person selected will develop independent research programs and join ongoing studies focused on various aspects of human cancer genetics including

  • Identification and characterization of hereditary cancer susceptibility syndromes
  • Evaluation and management of individuals with mutations in various cancer susceptibility genes
  • Chemoprevention, intervention research in genetically-predisposed populations
  • Assessment of the role of common, low-penetrance genes as determinants of various outcomes of cancer treatment or modifiers of the effects of major susceptibility genes.

The candidate must be sufficient experience to function independently, both in developing his or her own research and in mentoring and supervising junior staff and trainees. NIEHS Seeks Breast Cancer Researcher in Epidemiology

The Epidemiology Branch of the NIEHS is seeking a breast cancer researcher with interests in breast cancer, genetic susceptibility and biomarkers of exposure to be the project director for a large cohort study of genetic and environmental risk factors for breast cancer.  The incumbent will serve as an interface among Branch, laboratory and contract support staff, and will serve on the Steering Committee for the study. The incumbent will participate in priority setting for use of study data as well as collection of new data, and will conduct independent research using the cohort data.  Other duties will include oversight of data collection and a large specimen bank, as well as data analysis and publication.  While the primary focus of the study is breast cancer, it will be possible to carry out research on other outcomes within the cohort.

Candidates should have a doctoral degree, and have postdoctoral training and/or a significant level of accomplishment in epidemiology, including the design and conduct of field studies and scientific publication.  Preference will be given to candidates with a proven track record in breast cancer research and/or molecular epidemiology.  Candidates should demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in hypothesis-driven research and proposal development
  • Ability to ask hypothesis-driven questions about breast cancer etiology
  • Ability to analyze data
  • Ability to publish and present scientific data
  • Ability to identify important information and pursue leads
  • Experience/ability in conducting field studies.
