IRO Greets Vladivostok Librarians with Latest Technological Trends and New Programs

On February 15, Information Resource Officer (IRO) Laura Kaspari Hohmann visited the Vladivostok American Corner where she met with 70 local librarians and delivered two presentations on "Web 2.0: Its Use in American Libraries" and on "The One City, One Book Reading Program." In her first presentation, Ms. Hohmann discussed blogs, wikis, social networking sites, and other web 2.0 technologies, explaining how American libraries are incorporating these into library services. In her second presentation, IRO talked about the history of community reading programs in America, federal support for these programs, and how to start your own community reading program. Both presentations generated keen interest among the audience that acknowledged that even if Russian libraries do not implement all the latest technologies in their work yet, it is very useful to be aware of the latest trends in U.S. librarianship.
