Visit of IRI Asia Division Program Manager Mr. John Miller

During December 11-22, IRI Asia Division Program Manager Mr. John Miller visited Mongolia to discuss and agree on IRI Mongolia’s detailed work plan with its partner organizations covering the first quarter of CY 2009.  Mr. Miller met with General Secretary of the Democratic Party (DP) Mr. D. Erdenebat,  Secretary of the Mongolian Peoples Revolutionary Party (MPRP) Mr. U. Barsbold, Director of  the Prognosis Academy under MPRP Dr. S. Odkhuu, General Secretary of the State Great Hural (SGH) Secretariat Mr. Ts. Sharavdorj, Senior Officer of the Standing Committee on State Structure Mr. Chagnaadorj, Chairwoman of the Democratic Women’s Union (DWU) Ms. B. Delgermaa, representatives of the politically active youth at the National University of Mongolia, representatives of the DP’s youth organization, Director of Policy Analysis Institute (PAI) Dr. Chuluunbaatar and USAID Mongolia Senior Program Manager Mr. Jeff Goodson during his visit.  

Mr. Miller also met with the Chair of the Ethics sub-committee of the SGH Member of Parliament (MP) G. Bayarsaihan (DP) and MP B.Baterdene (MPRP).   MP Bayarsaihan updated Mr. Miller on the status of the Ethics rule for the High ranking officials and exchanged opinions on the future programming issues.

During the partner meetings, IRI outlined proposed activities and gathered information on how to better serve its partners in developing activities for the next few months. The meetings also gave IRI the opportunity to reaffirm its partnerships and talk about new ways to work together in the future. During the meeting with General Secretary of SGH Secretariat Mr. Ts. Sharavdorj, IRI and the SGH agreed on a continued partnership and to conduct Parliamentary Strengthening seminars in the first two weeks of February 2009. 

Asia Pacific Democracy Partnership (APDP) Election Observation Mission’s report

In December, IRI DC and Mongolia staff finalized the layout of the APDP Election Observation Mission’s final report and signed a contract to print 250 copies of the report with a local printing company.

IRI Mongolia staff and Mongolian delegate participated in parliamentary election observation in Bangladesh

From December 22 to January 2, IRI facilitated an election observation mission of the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh for the Asia Pacific Democracy Partnership (APDP). IRI invited the Director of the Voter’s Alliance and Professor of National University of Mongolia D. Sukhbaatar to serve as the non-governmental representative from Mongolia on the APDP delegation. IRI Mongolia’s Mr.Khuujii Urnukh also participated in the EOM in Bangladesh as an IRI staffer.
