Boston — This week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized $30,000 during a routine examination of a passenger departing the United States at Logan International Airport.

Federal law requires that all persons arriving in and departing from the United States must report monetary instruments valued at or above $10,000 to CBP. In this instance a 33-year-old man and citizen of the United States, made false declarations to CBP officers when asked if he was carrying over $10,000 in monetary instruments which includes U.S. or foreign coins currently in circulation, currency, travelers’ checks, money orders, and other negotiable instruments or investment securities in bearer form.

“Once again, CBP officers at Logan Airport, while performing a routine examination of departing passengers uncovered a significant violation,” said Director of Field Operations Steven J. Farquharson. “We never know what we might find concealed in a person’s luggage or on their body when they are departing the United States.”

CBP officers not only conduct routine examinations of passengers and vehicles entering the United States but also exiting the country. The passenger’s money was seized pending further investigation.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
