Introduction

As an image delivery database system, AnatLine relies on a local client to provide user display and image processing support. VHDisplay is designed to support the file management and display functions intrinsic to AnatLine image records. VHDisplay is an image display software application with built in file management capabilities. This module is designed for.vhi format compatibility and consists of a file manager, a high resolution image display and a file parser.

VHDisplay file managment is an automated capability, activated upon initialization to utilize the encoded .vhi file specifier and catalog locally stored files. The file manager supports the local client application for decoding the .vhi embedded file specifier to catalog, retrieve and display file record data.

VHDisplay graphical user interface (GUI) displays an array of cataloged image records along with identifying anatomical labels to assist local image retrieval. The GUI provides the capabiltity to organize, select and display image records.

VHDisplay includes VHParser functions to extract bitmask image data for additional proccessing for visualization.

Installation

VHDisplay is designed to operate on high performance workstations and networks. Users without systems that meet recommended system requirements may experience performance problems. Additionally, VHDisplay requires Java JDK 1.2.

VHDisplay processes and displays large high-resolution image files with single file sizes as large as 2GB. Care must be exercised to install VHDisplay storage direcotries (VHLC) on disks with high storage capacity.

VHDisplay can be downloaded, and installed on the user's local workstation. VHDisplay works with each of the .vhi file types available from the AnatLine Database.

System Environment Settings

The user's workstation system environment must have the following settings:

Directory Structure

Installation of VHDisplay creates a VH Local Client Directory (VHLC). The VHLC directory contains two image subdirectories; a directory to hold uncataloged images downloaded from AnatLine, and the image directory for storing image files following the catalog process.

The Download Directory contains uncatalogued downloaded image files. Users must download into the Download directory for the VHDisplay File Management component to function. During each run time, VHDisplay file manager checks its Download Directory for newly retrieved files. When new files are detected, the file manager catalogs and move the files into the Image Directory.

Image Display

VHDisplay's GUI provides a presentation of locally stored .vhi files downloaded from the AnatLine system. User selects images for display by file type or anatomical type from the tabbed folders presented in the interface. Although the application is designed for expansion capabilities of CT and MRI image files, the prototype AnatLine images do not include files for CT or MRI images.

Image files are classified by Image Type (Cross Section Color, VOI Color, ByteMask Color and Rendered Color) and Anatomy Type (i.e. Heart, Spine, etc. Users may create personalized directories of images using VHDisplay's editing capabilities.

VHDisplay provides several viewing options for the AnatLine images.

Cross Section Color

Displays individual Cross Section files and Text Information Block.

VOI Color

The Volume of Interest (VOI) display provides a stack of files that may be viewed in sequence through the operation of the slider bar or by individual image slice number.

Users may view the VOI images with or without the overlaid ByteMask, ByeMask image only or the Text Information Block. A list of structures to the right of the image allows the user to view the specific Bytemasked structures.

ByteMask Color

Similar to the VOI Color display, the ByteMask Color displays Cross Section Files and the corresponding ByteMask overlays. All corresponding Cross Sections must be stored in the Image Directory for the ByteMask Color to operate.

The user may view the images with or without the overlaid ByteMask, ByeMask image only or the Text Information Block. A list of structures to the right of the image allows the user to view the specific Bytemasked structures.

Rendered Color

Displays Rendered Image file.
