Natural Gas Infrastructure Development

There is much to consider when building compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueling infrastructure. This page provides resources to help you start developing natural gas fueling infrastructure and learn about challenges you might face.

Some of the following documents are available as Adobe Acrobat PDFs. Download Adobe Reader.

Getting Started

An excellent place to start learning about natural gas vehicles and infrastructure is Compressed Natural Gas: A Suite of Tutorials. The CD, developed by Marathon Technical Services with DOE support, contains hundreds of information-packed pages on an array of topics:

You can order the CD from the EERE Information Center; reference report number NREL/CD-540-37146. CD quantities are limited. You can download the CD contents (PDF 44 KB). Clicking this link will enable you to download the CD contents in zipped format. The files are very large (585 MB), so a fast Internet connection is required.

Also visit the Fleets section for information on how to build your alternative fuel vehicle fleet.

Natural Gas Information and Advocacy Organizations

The following organizations provide information about natural gas vehicle and infrastructure technology, standards, safety, policy, advocacy, and more:

Training

Visit the AFDC Alternative Fuels Technician Training page to learn about organizations that provide natural gas vehicle and infrastructure training.

Fleet Experiences

Visit Fleet Experiences to learn how others have successfully implemented natural gas vehicles and infrastructure as well as the benefits and challenges they have experienced.

The article Building Successful AFV Fueling Stations—Tips, Best Practices, and Lessons Learned (PDF 1.5 MB) summarizes characteristics of successful infrastructure development projects.
