Title:  NITROGEN EXPORT IWI

Abstract:
The Importance of Watershed Nitrogen Export Total nitrogen includes the organic and inorganic forms of nitrogen that serve as nutrients for both desirable and undesirable aquatic plant growth. Local TN export refers to the annual quantity of total nitrogen that comes from pollution sources in a watershed and leaves the watershed in the river or stream that connects the watershed to other watersheds downstream. This indicator is an expression of the disparity between the sources of nitrogen (usually fertilizers, animal wastes, atmospheric deposition, and wastewater discharges) and the consumptive uses of nitrogen such as the growth of crops and natural processes that return nitrogen to the atmosphere. Watershed nitrogen exports are influenced by soils and by other natural watershed characteristics. Just as the sources of nitrogen in watersheds vary, so do the impacts of exported nitrogen. The impacts vary with such factors as water-column mixing, sunlight, temperature, and the availability of other nutrients. High levels of nitrogen are not always a cause of concern in the watersheds that export them, but these exports are known to influence the condition of coastal estuaries and lakes, and their reduction is the focus of several coastal management plans. In order to facilitate comparisons among large and small watersheds, TN export is mapped as yield, which refers to the kilograms exported per square kilometer of watershed area. Estimates of TN export were developed through analysis of data from monitoring stations in the US Geological Survey's NASQAN network using SPARROW (Spatially-Referenced Regressions on Watershed Attributes; Smith and others, 1997). This model relates in-stream measurements of TN export to point and nonpoint sources of pollution, and land-surface and stream-channel characteristics in the watersheds containing the monitoring stations.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Data Use / Constraints:  DATA SUFFICIENCY THRESHOLDSESTIMATES OF LOCAL TN EXPORT ARE PRESENTED FOR ALL WATERSHEDS EXCEPT THOSEIN WHICH THE RF1 REACH NETWORK IS INCOMPLETE.NOTES ON INTERPRETING THIS INFORMATIONONE REASON FOR USING THE SPARROW MODEL TO INTERPRET MONITORING DATA AND DEVELOP ESTIMATES OFLOCAL TN EXPORT RATHER THAN USING MONITORING DATA ALONE IS THAT MONITORING DATA ALONE SHOW THE CUMULATIVE RATE OF TN TRANSPORT FROM ALL WATERSHEDS UPSTREAM OF THE MONITORING STATION. LOCAL TNEXPORT REFERS TO THE EXPORT OF TN FROM SOURCES WITHIN A SINGLE WATERSHED. MANY WATERSHEDS ON LARGE RIVERS RECEIVE THE EXPORT FROM TENS OR EVENHUNDREDS OF WATERSHEDS UPSTREAM, AND THE TOTAL QUANTITY OF TN TRANSPORTEDFROM THESE BASINS CAN ORIGINATE ALMOST ENTIRELY FROM POLLUTION SOURCESOUTSIDE THE WATERSHED IN QUESTION.THE INFORMATION PRESENTED HERE IS DESIGNED TO REPRESENT LOCAL TN EXPORT DUE TO POLLUTION SOURCES PRESENT IN 1987 UNDER LONG-TERM MEAN STREAM FLOWCONDITIONS. THE MAGNITUDE OF POINT AND NONPOINT TN SOURCES HAS CHANGED TO VARYING DEGREES SINCE 1987 DUE TO CHANGING LEVELS OF ACTIVITY AND POLLUTION CONTROL IN DIFFERENT SECTORS OF THE ECONOMY. FOR EXAMPLE, THE FRACTION OF THE NATION'S FARMLAND UNDER CONSERVATION TILLAGE AND OTHER "BESTMANAGEMENT" PRACTICES HAS STEADILY INCREASED SINCE 1987, AND THISINFORMATION DOES NOT REFLECT THESE CHANGES.PLANS TO IMPROVE THIS DATA LAYERDURING THE COMING YEAR, ESTIMATES OF TN EXPORT WILL BE UPDATED TO REFLECTPOINT AND NONPOINT POLLUTION SOURCES AND RELATED ACTIVITIES PRESENT IN1992. IT IS ALSO ANTICIPATED THAT THE SPATIAL RESOLUTION OF THE ANALYSIS WILL BE SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED THROUGH THE USE OF ONE-KILOMETER SCALE LAND USE AND LAND COVER INFORMATION.
