EAST ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WINS BROOKHAVEN LAB'S MODEL BRIDGE CONTEST

William Thornewell, an East Islip High School student, won first-place in Brookhaven National Laboratory's seventeenth annual Model Bridge Contest. Placed under a stress tester (shown in the background of the photo), Thornewell's 43.8-gram bridge held more than 298 pounds, or 3,089 times its own weight. Janet Tempel, head of Brookhaven's museum programs, displays a $100 gift certificate to a local computer store, which she presented to Thornewell, courtesy of Brookhaven Lab. With their round-trip airfare paid by Brookhaven Lab's new management team, Brookhaven Science Associates, Thornewell, along with second-place winner Allison Mooney, from Walt Whitman High School, will get a chance to enter the 1998 International Bridge Building Contest, which will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 2. Approximately 250 high school students from 24 schools in Suffolk County entered Brookhaven's contest, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.

PATCHOGUE-MEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT PLACES THIRD IN BROOKHAVEN LAB'S MODEL BRIDGE CONTEST

Brian Franco, a Patchogue-Medford High School student, won third-place in Brookhaven National Laboratory's seventeenth annual Model Bridge Contest. Placed under a stress tester, Franco's 32.2-gram bridge held more than 206 pounds, or 2,913 times its own weight. He won a $50 gift certificate to a local computer store, which Janet Tempel (pictured) presented to him, courtesy of Brookhaven Lab. Also, Brookhaven Lab's new management team, Brookhaven Science Associates, will pay for the round-trip airfare for the first- and second-place winners - William Thornewell of East Islip High School and Allison Mooney of Walt Whitman High School, respectively - to enter the 1998 International Bridge Building Contest, which will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 2. Franco is the alternate, in case either of those two students could not participate in the international contest. Approximately 250 high school students from 24 schools in Suffolk County entered Brookhaven's contest, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.
