Campbell E, Roach TC; International Conference on AIDS.

Int Conf AIDS. 1993 Jun 6-11; 9: 860 (abstract no. PO-D14-3853).

Carnival and Carnival street bands are an integral part of many Caribbean festivals. For the last two years Barbados, a small island of the West Indies has utilized the medium of an "AIDS BAND" to educate the general public about the disease, the routes of transmission and preventative measures. The festival of "Grand Kadooment" is a carnival that celebrates the completion of the sugar cane harvest and consists of colourful bands of costumed revellers accompanied by calypso, steel band and indigenous music tramp the streets. "AIDS--Journey to a New Dawn", a band organized by the National Adivsory Committee, the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners and the AIDS Society of Barbados participated in the 1992 Grand Kadooment. The 110 member band won prizes in the categories--Best Small Band; Best Band on the Road and Best Costume Community Band. It is estimated that 55,000 members of the public observed the band from the roadside; 150,000 watched the band on television. 20,000 fliers giving safe sex advice and 10,000 condoms were distributed by members during the street festivities. At least 75% of the Islands population were exposed to this culturally appropriate form of AIDS education. It is recommended that other countries--particularly Caribbean islands and Latin American countries that have annual festivals utilize this form of AIDS education.
