Humboldt State University, Arcata, CA. 91 pp. Prescribed burns conducted when water levels are above the soil surface can reduce muskrat numbers or destroy entire colonies. Burns conducted when water levels are at or below the soil surface result in the least damage because the animals can burrow for protection if soils are deep. Burns in late dry season can also be detrimental if early rains cause sudden flooding of burrows. [K-L-S]
