  • Alaska: Spirit of the Wild: IMAX, 1997 - 40 minutes
"Explosive glaciers, the celestial fires of the Aurora Borealis, the beauty of the polar bear and the deadly hunt of the wolf pack," are all included in this IMAX exploration of Alaska. Narrated by Charlton Heston.
  • Antarctica: IMAX, 1991 - 40 minutes
This 1991 documentary captures Antarctica's grandeur, "from the continent's glorious glaciers to the meteorological treasures locked in its ice sheets."
  • March of the Penguins, 2004 - 85 minutes
    Narrated by Morgan Freeman.
  • The Blue Planet: Ocean World - Frozen Seas, 2001 - 60 minutes.
"Ocean World - Frozen Seas" is one of two episodes from the Blue Planet series that are included on this DVD/video (the other is "Seas of Life").
  • Eyewitness: Arctic and Antarctic, 1997 - 35 minutes
Part of the Eyewitness educational video series, which features simple discussions of scientific material for kids and their parents. Martin Sheen hosts this program.
Additonal Resources
EARTH OBSERVATORY
earthobservatory.nasa.gov
This is an interactive web-based magazine which includes satellite imagery and scientific data about Earth. Site allows you to read articles, download datasets and images, learn about Earth missions, search an online library, track natural disasters in near-real time and access interactive experiments and classroom activities.
Recommended for all levels.

EXPEDITION SERIES
planetearthscience.org
The Expedition series of educational modules were developed by Planet Earth Science through funding from NASA. They can be freely downloaded (along with the educator's guide.)

    Three "expeditions" to try include:
  • Antarctic Expeditions: Ozone
    www.planetearthscience.org/Ozone_Hole.html
In this adventure, students are "hired" to determine if the size of the Antarctic ozone hole is increasing. Satellite images of ozone concentration and instructional movies are included. Download software (windows and Mac) and teachers guide (PDF) from this website. Recommended for middle school.
  • Earth Expeditions: Global Warming
    www.planetearthscience.org/Global_Warming.html
Students are placed on a research vessel where they run computer climate models to predict how climate in regions around the world may change as the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere continues to rise. Computer climate models, a data center and instructional movies are located within the research center to assist them. Download software (Windows and Mac) and teachers guide (PDF) from this website Recommended for middle school.
  • Pacific Expeditions: El Nino
    www.planetearthscience.org/El_Nino.html
This CD-ROM engages students in a journey where they must navigate their own ship, operate modern research tools and manipulate satellite and climate model data to investigate and help predict El Nino. Download software (Windows and Mac) and teachers guide (PDF) from this website.
Recommended for middle school.
