REP. ANDREWS RECEIVES PRIVATE BRIEFING FROM PENTAGON OFFICIALS ON CHEMICAL/BIOLOGICAL ATTACK PREPARATIONS
October 16, 2001

Today, I was given a personal briefing from the Pentagon to discuss efforts to ensure that our nation can respond to a widespread biological or chemical weapon attack.  Bioterrorism has already hit our nation in such places as Florida, New York, Washington, D.C., and Central New Jersey.  We need to be ready to report the facts to the public and protect our people.

I will work with Pentagon officials and our local first responders and emergency planners to ensure that South Jersey is ready in the event of such an attack.  I want to applaud the brave South Jersey men and women who are responsible for responding to possible chemical or biological weapon attacks in our region.  They have already responded to numerous calls.  Thankfully, these calls apparently were all false alarms.   I plan to work with these South Jersey emergency personnel and other entities such as the Pentagon to make sure that South Jersey makes further efforts to be as prepared as they can.

I have asked federal officials from the Department of Defense, FEMA and other appropriate agencies to meet personally with our South Jersey leadership to evaluate and improve or joint efforts to respond to such attacks.  I am confident that with careful planning and dedicated professionals executing that plan, we will be safe and secure.
