Maxfield Candy Co. Announces Voluntary Recall of All Peanut Cluster Products

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --  Salt Lake City, UT – February 18, 2009 – Maxfield Candy Company today announced it is voluntarily recalling all peanut cluster products containing peanuts which were sourced from Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) and have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Maxfield Candy Company is undertaking this voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution and concern for its customers. Maxfield Candy Company has tested lot samples of all its products and all peanut products have tested negative for Salmonella. No illnesses have been reported.

The items subject to this recall are the peanut clusters. Consumers may have purchased recalled items from the Maxfield’s Candy Company plant under the Maxfield’s, Botticelli, Hallmark and Landmark brands.  Maxfield Candy Company distributes its products primarily through traditional retail channels throughout the United States and Canada.

The product descriptions and stock code numbers for the recalled products are listed below:

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The FDA and other regulatory agencies have been investigating Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) due to a recent Salmonella outbreak associated with various peanut products. The FDA has advised that all products produced by PCA from its Blakely, Georgia facility are subject to recall. For further information about the PCA recall, visit the Food and Drug Administration online at http://www.fda.gov.
