Abstract The Volcanic Ash Sulfur Dioxide Balloon Experiment (VASDBE) is a group of sampling instruments that is designed to deploy rapidly in a balloon-borne manner into a cloud of volcanic ash 24-96 hours after a large volcano has erupted. The results of this study will be utilized to refine the calibration of algorithms that measure sulfur dioxide and ash by remote sensing imagery. The intention is to improve ash warnings to aircraft, when the warnings are based on remote sensing.
