    Army honors ANL-W retiree
    for Korean War gallantry

A medical clinic at Ft. Sill, Okla., has been named for recently retired Argonne-West employee David Bleak (FO-AW). Photo: 45K

The Sergeant David B. Bleak Troop Medical Clinic was dedicated April 20 and has been in operation since July of 1994. Built at a cost of $2.1 million, it contains ten examination rooms, one treatment room, a laboratory, a pharmacy, physical therapy and x-ray capabilities.

Bleak was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for distinguished service in the Korean War. The medal is awarded for "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty," and is presented by the President of the United States.

In June of 1952, while serving as a medical aidman with the 40th Infantry Division near Minari-gol, Korea, Bleak volunteered to accompany a reconnaissance patrol to capture a prisoner for interrogation. The patrol came under heavy fire and suffered several casualties.

Bleak administered to the wounded, then continued up a rugged slope to attend to more wounded. He entered the trench, killed three enemy soldiers in hand-to-hand fighting, then shifted his position to shield a companion from the impact of a concussion grenade.

Later, while attending to the wounded, he was struck by hostile gun fire, but still carried an injured comrade down the hill. He managed to overpower yet two more enemy soldiers -- by bashing their heads together -- as he carried his friend to safety.

    Colloquium speakers to cover
    `Newt Congress,' Chicago housing

Argonne-East will host two colloquiums in two days early in May.

On Tuesday, May 2, at 10 a.m. in the Building 362 auditorium, Daniel S. Greenberg speak on "The Newt Congress and Its Impact On Science." Greenburg is editor and publisher of Science and Government Report.

On Thursday, May 4, Vincent Lane, chairman of the board of commissioners of the Chicago Housing Authority, will speak on "Public Housing in Chicago: The Challenges Ahead." Lane's talk will begin at 3 p.m. in the Building 362 auditorium.

DOE announce realignment findings; live audio to be heard in cafeteria

Live audio of the final recommendations of a DOE team working on "strategic realignment" of the U.S. Department of Energy, and comments by Energy Secretary Hazel O'Leary will be heard in Argonne-East's Building 213 cafeteria May 3.

The sounds of a press conference by DOE's Strategic Alignment Initiative teams will be broadcast in the cafeteria beginning at 10:30 a.m. At 12:30 p.m., those in the cafeteria will hear a message by O'Leary announcing additional measures to improve the Department of Energy's efficiency and effectiveness.

The alignment initiative is part of the department's contract reform and restructuring efforts that aim to save more than $5 billion over the next five years. Teams of DOE employees and experts in corporate redeployment have examined the department's structure, functions, and financial and human resources.

The press conference and O'Leary's comments will be videotaped for showing at a later date. Details will be posted in Argonne Week.

Ground broken for Building 306 rehab

Jim Hooper (DOE-AAO), EMO Director Ron Coley, Tim Bergin of Chicago Heights Construction Company, Argonne Chief Operations Officer Ron Teunis and Gail MacMillan (EMO) recently broke ground for the rehabilitation of Argonne-East's Building 306. (Photo: 124K)

The project calls for a new dock on the east end of the building for shipping low-level radioactive waste, and relocating the sorting and compaction of low-level waste to the northeast part of the building. For more information on the project, call MacMillan at ext. 2-9549.

Tickets go on sale for Glenn Miller orchestra

Argonne Club is sponsoring an evening at a concert by the Glenn Miller Orchestra on Sunday, May 21.

The orchestra will perform at 3 p.m. at the Rialto Square Theatre, Joliet. Tickets are $15 and will be sold in Argonne-East's 213 cafeteria the week of May 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

No bus service will be provided. For more information, contact Marjorie Brockman at ext. 2-9962.

Combs, Bears battle to tie; $15,000 raised

A blend of psychology and discretion enabled Dick Combs (OTD) and other leaders of Cub Scout Pack 372 to tie a team of five Chicago Bears in a charity basketball game on April 23.

The five-on-five game raised about $15,000 for research into Batten's disease, a fatal illness affecting one of Pack 372's scouts, Christopher McDonough. More than 80 area businesses and sports teams contributed half-time raffle prizes.

Combs, a den leader with Pack 372 for ten years, said Bears Jerry Fontenot, Troy Auzenne, Barry Minter, Todd Perry and Terry Obee were more than a little intimidating, but some hard-court trickery led to the 82-all tie score.

"We would fake to get them to jump, and shoot while they were on the way down," Combs said, "Then we'd get the heck out of the way."

Training helps PFS supervisors `Walk the Talk'

Seventy-five Plant Facilities and Services foremen, supervisors and managers have completed 16 hours of training designed to help improve safety and quality by helping their employees participate in the improvement process.

The "Walk the Talk" process focuses on the actions and communication skills involved in supervision. One aspect involves "coaching" and motivating employee work groups in solving operational and safety issues, said Kay Johnson (PFS).

"This wasn't a safety program," she said. "It's a process for improving safety and operations together through a change in the culture and how we work with employees."

"Walk the Talk" could be considered the "lab practical" portion of a 36-week supervisory training program the same group took through Joliet Junior College last year, Johnson said.

The process focused on solving "real-world" problems faced by supervisors and employees. Attendees were asked to try the techniques they had learned at their first meeting and share the results at the second session.

One example involved team members role playing real-life situations with supervisors demonstrating leadership and coaching techniques learned in the first session. The exercise was videotaped and results shared at the second session.

For example, one foreman met with his work group and asked each employee to identify at least one tool that presented ergonomic problems. After those tools are determined, the foreman will arrange for his employees to review, select and test potential replacements incorporating ergonomic design. If the employees determine that the replacements are a success, they will share the information with other work groups.

Computer users to meet May 2

The next meeting of the Argonne Computer Users Group (CUG) will be held Tuesday, May 2, at 3 p.m. in Argonne-East's Building 203 Auditorium.

    The agenda includes discussion of:

    * An ECT memo to users about IBM-3084 migrated datasets

    * Licensed Versions of Netscape available through ECT

    * CC:Mail Directory, which includes all Argonne e-mail addresses

    * High-speed (28.8 kbps) modem status

    * Status of upgrades to the electronic link between Argonne-East and Argonne-West.

The CUG usually meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 3 p.m. in the Building 203 Auditorium. Meetings are open to all interested Argonne and DOE employees.

Send topic suggestions to Pat Garner (PLGarner@anl.gov, or ext. 2-4872). To subscribe to the CUG mailing list, send "subscribe cuglist e_address" in the body of an e-mail message to Majordomo@salt.ra.anl.gov. Replace "e_address" with a valid e-mail address.

Additional CUG information is available in newsgroup anl.committees.cug and on the World Wide Web as http://www.anl.gov/CUG/home.html.

    ESH class added

Course 524, Radioactive Waste Generator Training, has been added to the May ESH Training Schedule.

The course will be held Friday, May 19, from 2:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. in Building 202, Room B169. Attendance at this session will meet the requirement for retraining as well as initial training. Registration is available on the Training Management System.

    Phone directories recyclable

Now that Argonne-East employees have received 1995 Argonne telephone directories, they may be wondering what to do with their `94 Directories.

According to Ron Coley, director of Environmental Management Operations, employees may dispose of the old directories as regular trash. USA Waste, the trash hauler for the laboratory, has the equipment and capabilities to sort and recycle the directories.
