Abstract This article compares the use of untopcoated galvanizing and inorganic zinc-rich coatings and to give guidelines on the uses and merits of each. There are no simple answers to which is best to use for new structures because the materials are basically equal in corrosion resistance and performance. Galvanizing is usually cheaper for grating and small pieces. Untopcoated IOZ coatings are cost effective on long assemblies, large structural pieces, piping and vessels. Each project must be evaluated specifically on its corrosive environment, nature, size of the structure, components and design life.
