This has been done. sam_config has been fixed as of v7_0_1, sam_ns_ior has been distributed, and all is well. Consider it my swan song.

sam_ns_ior: a good idea, needs some work

• In use on bagend. Has been for several months. No problems. The easiest way to demonstrate:

  Note that SAM_NAMING_SERVICE_IOR is entirely readable, and it is intuitively obvious whither the queries should go.


• Initial conversion of existing installations may have problems, not due to sam_ns_ior itself, but due to bugs in sam_config.

  sam_config does not always update everything when a new release comes along... some configs originally in vx_dir; next release in vy_dir; later release does not get vx configs, instead gets ups db errors... especially painful in situations with many, many configs; might want to search/copy/merge all configs from all versions before installing new release, just to clean up and avoid problems....

• Similar to tns_names for db mappings, this is a config with IOR mapping; comes with pre-defined mappings for cdf/d0/minos dev/int/prd as best known at that time
• Still some tweaks needed, primarily to remove the $SAM_XXX_NS_IOR values after setting $SAM_NAMING_SERVICE_IOR (while still inside the table file for a sam_config, some combination of "-j" and not "-j" in the right places, table files for sam_config and table file templates for the sub-configs); otherwise, big env bloat, problems in some contexts. Another approach: distribute with "-q cdf", or "-q d0", etc., and only include the 3 env's (dev/int/prd).
• makes it much easier to change a nameserver machine, by cutting one new release of sam_ns_ior and pointing to it;
• complication: existing configs would need to be converted a la Sinisa's script (but easier to go from some ior to the new scheme!).
