Online Abstract Submission
The 2008 Diesel Engine-Efficiency and Emissions Research (DEER) Conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn in Dearborn, Michigan, from August 4-7, 2008. DEER 2008 is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Vehicle Technologies (OVT) and is DOE’s primary mechanism for the public exchange of state-of-the-art combustion engine research and development. DOE will showcase its cooperatively funded R&D with its partners, national laboratories, the nation’s passenger and commercial transportation industry, universities and other national and international organizations. DEER fosters the exchange of information and best practices through presentations and posters from new and on-going engine R&D, and networking with industry colleagues.

Submission Deadline
Presentations and posters will be selected by an open competition. Abstract submissions are due by May 8, 2008 (by 5 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time). Authors will be notified by Friday, June 30, 2008 regarding acceptance. We are soliciting one-page abstracts from which a team of leading principal investigators in the field of engine research will select sixty 20-minute oral only presentations to be given in the sessions below. We will also be selecting an additional 75 abstracts for poster presentations during the evening receptions. The following topics are solicited for abstracts, but not limited to:
- Advanced Combustion Technologies
- In-Cylinder Emissions Reductions and Efficiency Improvements
- Advanced Fuel Injection Equipment and Controls
- Modeling and Analysis
- High-Efficiency Engine Technologies
- Thermal Efficiency Improvement and Emissions Compliance
- Development Challenges for Light-Duty Diesels
- Turbo-Compounding Systems and Bottoming Cycles
- Engine Down-Sizing Techniques
- Fuels and High Performance Lubricants
- Customized Fuels vs. "Smart Engines"
- New Feedstocks for Diesel Fuels and Fuel Blends
- Impact of Shale Oil and Oil Sands on Fuel Properties
- Properties and Quality Control Issues for Biodiesel Blends
- Lube Oil Additive's Effect on Aftertreatment Devices
- Lubricant’s Role in Improving Fuel Economy
- Emission Control Technologies
- NOx and PM Emission Control Technologies
- Performance/Durability Issues
- Urea Quality, Infrastructure, Distribution and Anti-Tampering Issues
- Idle Reduction Technologies
- Heavy-Duty Hybrid Powertrain Technologies
- Mobile Source Air Toxics (MSATs)
- Thermoelectrics for Vehicle Applications
- Thermoelectric Generator Development
- Scale-Up of High Efficiency Nanoscale Thermoelectric Materials
- Thermoelectric HVAC Systems
Abstract submissions will be selected based on the following criteria:
- Pertinence of the reported work to the objective of high efficiency clean combustion engine technologies
- Approach being pursued
- Progress achieved on the project
- Interest to the advanced combustion engine and emission control community
- How the proposed technology advances the state of the art of combustion engine efficiency and/or compliance with emissions regulations
- Timeliness (late-breaking news)
All submissions should be proofread carefully as each abstract will be published as submitted. The deadline for all submissions is Thursday, May 8, 2008 (by 5 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time). Authors will be notified of the disposition of their papers by Friday, June 30, 2008.
Abstract File Format
- Maximum of one 8½" x 11" page or A4-size page
- PDF files only (This is the only format the submittal site will upload. If you try to upload another file type, the system will tell you the file didn’t upload because it wasn’t a PDF.)
- The one-page limit includes graphics and illustrations
- All margins are 1" (2.5 cm)
- Preferred font for body text is Times New Roman, 11 pts.
At the top right-hand corner of the abstract:
- Identify principal investigator(s) and affiliations
- Underline the presenter's name
- Identify preferred session for your presentation (you may put the subcategory beside the session category)
An example abstract (PDF) is provided for your convenience and reference.
File Naming Convention
Please use the following naming convention for your abstract file:
PI Last Name_PI Organization.pdf (example: Garland_ORISE.pdf)
Commercialization
The use of company logos or trade names should be avoided on any audio-video aids used in conjunction with your DEER 2008 presentation. Presentations at the DEER conference are intended to discuss technical issues with the audience. Commercialization is not permitted. Your company affiliation will be included in your introduction.
Online Submission Guide
To submit an abstract online, click the log-in button located at the top of the left navigation pane. Click the 'Create New Account' link and create your log-in account. You will then be directed to the file upload page where you can load your abstract.
On the file upload screen, you must enter the PI information for each abstract, select an abstract type and session category, and browse and upload your abstract in PDF format. You will be able to see the results of your upload in the upload summary area. You may continue to upload additional abstracts from this screen.
To view the complete list of files you have successfully uploaded, from the file upload page, click the link titled "Abstract upload history" at the bottom of the page. This will display in table format all the files that you have uploaded. You will not be able to open, edit, or delete files that you have submitted, only view the PI information, file name, and date uploaded for each submission.
When you have finished uploading your presentation, click the log out button on the left navigation pane to exit the online submission system.
Returning users
You may return to the online submission system at any time (prior to the review) and upload your presentation. Simply click the log-in button above and enter the user name and password you created on your initial visit, and you will be directed to the presentation upload page.
How to Delete or Replace a File
You cannot delete a file, but you can upload a new file to supersede it. If you do so, please indicate that the new file should replace the previously uploaded file in the “abstract-related comments” field.
