REMARKS.--All water-quality samples were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey. Interruptions in the daily record were due to malfunctions of the equipment. Samples are filtered through a glass-fiber membrane filter with openings that are 0.7 microns in size to remove sediment and microorganisms. The filtered water is field extracted on C-18 solid phase extraction cartridges and analyzed by a gas chromatography/mass spectrometric detector. The method detection limit (MDL) provides an index to indicate where measurement uncertainty is increased. INSTRUMENTATION.--Suspended-sediment samples were collected daily and more often during storm events by an observer from October 1971 to September 1972. Water temperature was measured and collected at hourly intervals using an in-situ probe with an electronic data logger from October 1996 to current year. REMARKS.--All water-quality samples were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey except those furnished by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources as noted. Interruptions in the daily records were due to malfunctions of the equipment. Additional sites in the (NAWQA) fixed-station network are shown in figure 6 on page 28. DRAINAGE AREA.--451 mi2. WATER-DISCHARGE RECORDS PERIOD OF RECORD.--October 1913 to March 1936, October 1938 to current year. Monthly discharge only for some periods, published in WSP 1305. Monthly figures adjusted for storage and diversion for October 1918 to September 1921, published in WSP 503, 523, have been found in error and should not be used. PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD.-- SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE: July 1997 to September 1997. pH: July 1997 to September 1997. WATER TEMPERATURE: January 1978 to September 1979, November 1996 to current year. SUSPENDED SEDIMENT DISCHARGE: February 1977 to September 1979. INSTRUMENTATION.--From January 1978 to September 1979, water temperatures were once daily readings by an observer and suspended sediment samples were collected daily and more often during storm events by an observer. From November 1996 to current year, daily records of water temperature, specific conductance and pH were measured and collected at hourly intervals with in-situ probes and electronic data loggers. REMARKS.--All water-quality samples were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey except those furnished tby the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources as noted. Interruptions in the daily record were due to frozen river conditions or malfunctions of the equipment. Additional sites in the (NAWQA) fixed-station network are shown in figure 6 on page 28. An explanation of selected abbreviations used in the water-quality tables are given on pages 29-31. Suspended sediments were dewatered using a continuous flow centrifuge, dried, and analyzed directly for total metals using a nitric, hydrofluoric, perchloric acid digestion. Whole water contributions by the suspended sediment were then calculated using the suspended-sediment concentration in kilograms per liter (kg/L) and the analyte concentration in milligrams per kilogram (µg/kg) from the direct analysis of the suspended sediments, resulting in micrograms per gram (µg/g) concentrations. Values reported in percent are the percent of that constituent in the suspended sediment. OHIO RIVER MAIN STEM 03049500 ALLEGHENY RIVER AT NATRONA, PA (National water-quality assessment station) LOCATION.--Lat 40`36'55", long 79`43'07", Allegheny County, Hydrologic Unit 05010009, on right bank 520 ft upstream from dam at lock 4 at Natrona, 5.8 mi downstream from Kiskiminetas River, at mile 24.3. DRAINAGE AREA.--11,410 mi2, approximately. WATER-DISCHARGE RECORDS PERIOD OF RECORD.--October 1938 to current year. REVISED RECORDS.--WSP 1435: 1939. GAGE.--Water-stage recorder and concrete dam control. Datum of gage is 736.36 ft above sea level (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers bench mark). Prior to Apr. 14, 1940, nonrecording gage and Apr. 15, 1940 to Oct. 22, 1990, water- stage recorder at same site at datum 0.75 ft higher. REMARKS.--No estimated daily discharges. Records good. Flow regulated by Allegheny Reservoir, Chautauqua and Tionesta Lakes, Union City Reservoir, Woodcock Creek, East Branch Clarion River, Mahoning Creek, Crooked Creek, Yellow Creek, Conemaugh River, Loyalhanna Lake, and by 15 smaller reservoirs, combined capacity, excluding that of Chautauqua Lake, 2,069,000 acre-ft. Slight diversion since 1952 from Beaver Run Reservoir into the Monongahela River Basin. Several measurements of water temperature were made during the year. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers satellite telemeter at station. EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD.--Flood of Mar. 18, 1936 reached a stage of 32.06 ft, discharge, 365,000 ft3/s, determined by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. DRAINAGE AREA.--11,500 mi2. PERIOD OF RECORD.--July 1972 to December 1973, October 1974 to current year. PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD.-- SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE: October 1974 to September 1981. WATER TEMPERATURE: October 1974 to September 1981 and October 1996 to current year. SUSPENDED SEDIMENT DISCHARGES: October 1976 to September 1979. INSTRUMENTATION.--From October 1974 to September 1981, specific conductance and water temperature were once daily readings by an observer. From October 1976 to September 1979, suspended-sediment samples were collected daily and more often during storm events by an observer. From October 1996 to current year, daily records of water temperature were measured and collected at hourly intervals with an in-situ probe and electronic data logger. REMARKS.--Records of discharge are given for 03049500 Allegheny River at Natrona, Pa. All water-quality samples were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey. Interruptions in the daily record were due to malfunctions of the equipment. Additional sites in the (NAWQA) fixed-station network are shown in figure 6 on page 28. An explanation of selected abbreviations used in the water-quality tables are given on pages 29-31. Throughout the period of record, samples for this site have been collected at both the New Kensington highway bridge and the Hulton bridge in Oakmont (6.0 mi. downstream of the New Kensington highway bridge) due to factors such as bridge construction, highway detours, ice cover, etc. From April 1996 to the current year, all samples have been collected at the Hulton bridge in Oakmont because this location is downstream of Deer Creek. Deer Creek near Dorseyville, Pa., is an intensive fixed site for the NAWQA study unit. Suspended sediments were dewatered using a continuous flow centrifuge, dried, and analyzed directly for total metals using a nitric, hydrofluoric, perchloric acid digestion. Whole water contributions by the suspended sediment were then calculated using the suspended-sediment concentration in kilograms per liter (kg/L) and the analyte concentration in milligrams per kilogram (µg/kg) from the direct analysis of the suspended sediments, resulting in micrograms per gram (µg/g) concentrations. Values reported in percent are the percent of that constituent in the suspended sediment. Dashed lines (--) indicate no data available due to an insufficient amount of sediment in the sample. When no trace element was detected in the sample, the default reporting value is the method detection limit preceded by a less-than sign (<). DRAINAGE AREA.--1,715 mi2. WATER-DISCHARGE RECORDS PERIOD OF RECORD.--October 1920 to current year. Monthly discharge only for some periods, published in WSP 1305. REVISED RECORDS.--WSP 743: Drainage area. WSP 1305: 1924, 1926 (M), 1931 (M). WSP 1435: 1935-36. GAGE.--Water-stage recorder. Datum of gage is 733.36 ft above sea level. Prior to June 1, 1939, nonrecording gage at site 500 ft downstream at same datum. REMARKS.--Records good except for estimated daily discharges, which are fair. DRAINAGE AREA.--7,337 mi2. WATER-DISCHARGE RECORDS PERIOD OF RECORD.--October 1938 to current year. Monthly discharge only for some periods, published in WSP 1305. GAGE.--Water-stage recorder and fixed-crest concrete dam control with streamward lock chamber usable as floodway during high flow since 1951. Datum of gage is 709.66 ft above sea level (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers bench mark). Prior to Aug. 13, 1951, at site 700 ft upstream, and Aug. 13, 1951 to Nov. 8, 1990 at present site at datum 2.50 ft lower. REMARKS.--No estimated daily discharges. Records good. Flow regulated by locks and hydroelectric plants, since 1938 by Tygart Lake, since 1926 by Lake Lynn, since 1925 by Deep Creek Reservoir, since 1943 by Youghiogheny River Lake, and since 1990 by Stonewall Jackson Lake, combined capacity, 779,000 acre-ft. September 1994 to current year. PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD.-- SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE: January 1973 to October 1975. WATER TEMPERATURE: January 1973 to September 1979, November 1996 to current year. SUSPENDED SEDIMENT DISCHARGE: January 1973 to September 1979. INSTRUMENTATION.--From January 1973 to September 1979, specific conductance and water temperature were once daily readings by an observer. From January 1973 to September 1979, suspended-sediment samples were collected daily and more often during storm events by an observer. From November 1996 to current year, daily records of water temperature were measured and collected at hourly intervals with an in-situ probe and electronic data logger. REMARKS.--All water-quality samples were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey. Interruptions in the daily record were do to malfunctions of the equipment. Additional sites in the (NAWQA) fixed-station network are shown in figure 6 on page 28. An explanation of selected abbreviations used in the water- quality tables are given on pages 29-31. EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD.-- WATER TEMPERATURE: Maximum, 30.0`C, on several days during the summer periods; minimum, 0.0`C, on several days each year before 1979 water year. SEDIMENT CONCENTRATIONS: Maximum daily, 830 µg/L, March 15, 19, 1978; minimum daily, 2 µg/L, November 29, 1976. SEDIMENT DISCHARGES: Maximum daily, 210,000 tons, January 12, 1974; minimum daily, 14 tons, February 8, 1977.
