LOCATION.--Lat 41`38'31", long 79`20'18", Warren County, Hydrologic Unit 05010003,in the Allegheny National
   Forest, on right bank 20 ft downstream of Forest Service Road 119 bridge, 0.2 mi downstream of Camp Run, 0.5 mi
   upstream of Jaybuck Run, and 1.7 mi northeast of Queen, Pa.

DRAINAGE AREA.--20.3 mi2.

	WATER TEMPERATURE:  October 1996 to current year.

INSTRUMENTATION.--Daily record measured and collected at hourly intervals using an in-situ probe with
	 an electronic data logger.

REMARKS.--All water-quality samples were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey. Interruptions
	 in the daily record were due to malfunctions of the equipment. Additional sites in the (NAWQA) fixed-station
	 network are shown in figure 6 on page 28.  An explanation of selected abbreviations used in the water-
     quality tables are given on pages 29-31.

EXTREMES FOR CURRENT YEAR.--
	WATER TEMPERATURE:  Maximum, 23.5`C, July 29; minimum, 0.0`C, many days during winter periods.

REMARKS.--The following data are for analytes from the National Water Quality laboratory (NWQL)
	schedule 2010--pesticides in filtered water.  Samples are filtered through a glass-fiber membrane filter with
   	openings that are 0.7 microns in size to remove sediment and microorganisms.  The filtered water is field
   	extracted on C-18 solid phase extraction cartridges and analyzed by a gas chromatography/mass spectrometric
   	detector.
		The method detection limit (MDL) provides an index to indicate where measurement uncertainty
	is increased.  When an analyte is detected and all criteria for a positive result are met, the concentration
	is reported.  If the concentration is less than the MDL, an 'E' code will be reported with the value.  If the
	analyte is qualitatively identified as present, but the quantitative determination is substantially more
	uncertain, the NWQL will identify the result with an 'E' code even though the measured value is greater than
	the MDL.  A value reported with an 'E' code should be used with caution.  When no analyte is detected
	in a sample, the default reporting value is the MDL preceded by a less-than sign (<).

REMARKS.--The following data are for analytes from the National Water Quality laboratory (NWQL)
	schedule 2051--pesticides in filtered water.  Samples are filtered through a glass-fiber membrane filter with
   	openings that are 0.7 microns in size to remove sediment and microorganisms.  The filtered water is field
   	extracted on Carbopak B solid phase extraction cartridge and analyzed by high performance liquid
   	chromatography.
		The method detection limit (MDL) provides an index to indicate where measurement uncertainty
	is increased.  When an analyte is detected and all criteria for a positive result are met, the concentration
	is reported.  If the concentration is less than the MDL, an 'E' code will be reported with the value.  If the
	analyte is qualitatively identified as present, but the quantitative determination is substantially more

LOCATION.--Lat 41`26'15", long 79`57'22", Venango County, Hydrologic Unit 05010004, on right bank at upstream side
   of bridge on SR 3017 at Utica and 2,000 ft upstream from Mill Creek.

DRAINAGE AREA.--1,028 mi2.

PERIOD OF RECORD.--August 1932 to current year.

REVISED RECORDS.--WSP 743:   Drainage area.  WSP 823:   1936 (M).  WSP 1275:   1933, 1936.

GAGE.--Water-stage recorder.  Datum of gage is 1,019.44 ft above sea level.  Prior to Nov. 27, 1933, nonrecording
   gage at same site and datum.

REMARKS.--Records good except for estimated daily discharges, which are fair.  Flow regulated since 1971 by Union
   City Reservoir 50 mi upstream, serving as a retarding basin, and since January 1974 by Woodcock Creek Lake,
   25 mi upstream.  Several measurements of water temperature were made during the year.  U.S. Army Corps of
   Engineers satellite telemeter at station.

EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD.--Maximum stage since at least 1912, 15.7 ft in March 1913, discharge
   35,600 ft3/s.

PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD.--
	WATER TEMPERATURE:  October 1996 to current year.
	SUSPENDED SEDIMENT DISCHARGE:  October 1971 to September 1972.

INSTRUMENTATION.--Suspended-sediment samples were collected daily and more often during storm events
	 by an observer from October 1971 to September 1972.  Water temperature was measured and collected at hourly
	 intervals using an in-situ probe with an electronic data logger from October 1996 to current year.

REMARKS.--All water-quality samples were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey except those 	
     furnished by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources as noted.  Interruptions in the daily  	
     records were due to malfunctions of the equipment.  Additional sites in the (NAWQA) fixed-station network 	
     are shown in figure 6 on page 28.  An explanation of selected abbreviations used in the water-quality tables
     are given on pages 29-31.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD.--
	SEDIMENT CONCENTRATIONS:  Maximum daily, 404 µg/L, June 24, 1972; minimum daily, 3 µg/L on several days during

   and 5.2 mi upstream from confluence with Little Conemaugh River.

DRAINAGE AREA.--451 mi2.

PERIOD OF RECORD.--October 1913 to March 1936, October 1938 to current year.  Monthly discharge only for some
   periods, published in WSP 1305.  Monthly figures adjusted for storage and diversion for October 1918 to
   September 1921, published in WSP 503, 523, have been found in error and should not be used.  Published as "at
   Johnstown" 1914-36, and as "Stony Creek at Ferndale" 1938-79.  Gage-height records collected in this vicinity
   since 1885 are contained in reports of U.S. Weather Bureau.

GAGE.--Water-stage recorder.  Datum of gage is 1,184.06 ft above sea level.  Prior to Mar. 19, 1936, nonrecording
   gage at site 3.5 mi downstream at different datum.  Dec. 8, 1938 to Jan. 30, 1940, nonrecording gage at site
   50 ft downstream at present datum.

REMARKS.--Records good except for estimated daily discharges, which are fair.  Regulation by mine pumpage and
   reservoirs and diversion above station; the four largest reservoirs have a combined capacity of 42,360 acre-ft.
   Figures of daily discharge do not include diversion from Stonycreek River and Quemahoning Creek Reservoir to
   plants of Bethlehem Steel Co., and from Mill Creek, Dalton Run, and North Fork Bens Creek Reservoirs for water
   supply of city of Johnstown.  Several measurements of water temperature were made during the year.  U.S. Army
   Corps of Engineers satellite telemeter at station.

INSTRUMENTATION.--From January 1978 to September 1979, water temperatures were once daily readings by an observer
    and suspended sediment samples were collected daily and more often during storm events by an observer.  From
    November 1996 to current year, daily records of water temperature, specific conductance and pH were measured
    and collected at hourly intervals with in-situ probes and electronic data loggers.

REMARKS.--All water-quality samples were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey except those
    furnished tby the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources as noted.  Interruptions in the daily
    record were due to frozen river conditions or malfunctions of the equipment.  Additional sites in the (NAWQA)
    fixed-station network are shown in figure 6 on page 28.  An explanation of selected abbreviations used in the
    water-quality tables are given on pages 29-31.

REMARKS.--The following data are for trace elements and other constituents that were part of the suspended-
	sediment fraction of the water sample.  Suspended sediments were dewatered using a continuous flow centrifuge,
	dried, and analyzed directly for total metals using a nitric, hydrofluoric, perchloric acid digestion.  Whole
	water contributions by the suspended sediment were then calculated using the suspended-sediment concentration
	in kilograms per liter (kg/L) and the analyte concentration in milligrams per kilogram (µg/kg) from the direct
	analysis of the suspended sediments, resulting in micrograms per gram (µg/g) concentrations.  Values reported
	in percent are the percent of that constituent in the suspended sediment.   When no trace element was detected
	in the sample, the default reporting value is the method detection limit preceded by a less-than sign (<).

EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD.--Flood of Mar. 18, 1936 reached a stage of 32.06 ft, discharge, 365,000 ft3/s,
   determined by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

LOCATION.--Lat 40`33'52", long 79`46'22", Allegheny County, Hydrologic Unit 05010009, at New Kensington highway
     bridge, 5.1 mi downstream from dam at Lock 4 at Natrona, 5.3 mi downstream from gaging station at Natrona,
     and at mile 19.0 upstream from mouth.

DRAINAGE AREA.--11,500 mi2.

PERIOD OF RECORD.--July 1972 to December 1973, October 1974 to current year.

PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD.--
	SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE:  October 1974 to September 1981.
	WATER TEMPERATURE:  October 1974 to September 1981 and October 1996 to current year.
	SUSPENDED SEDIMENT DISCHARGES:  October 1976 to September 1979.

INSTRUMENTATION.--From October 1974 to September 1981, specific conductance and water temperature were once daily
     readings by an observer.  From October 1976 to September 1979, suspended-sediment samples were collected
     daily and more often during storm events by an observer.  From October 1996 to current year, daily records of
     water temperature were measured and collected at hourly intervals with an in-situ probe and electronic
     data logger.

REMARKS.--Records of discharge are given for 03049500 Allegheny River at Natrona, Pa.  All water-quality samples 	
     were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey.  Interruptions in the daily record were due to
    malfunctions of the equipment.  Additional sites in the (NAWQA) fixed-station network are shown
     in figure 6 on page 28.  An explanation of selected abbreviations used in the water-quality tables are given
     on pages 29-31.  Throughout the period of record, samples for this site have been collected at both 	 the New
     Kensington highway bridge and the Hulton bridge in Oakmont (6.0 mi. downstream of the New Kensington highway
     bridge) due to factors such as bridge construction, highway detours, ice cover, etc.  From April 1996 to the
     current year, all samples have been collected at the Hulton bridge in Oakmont because this location
     is downstream of Deer Creek.  Deer Creek near Dorseyville, Pa., is an intensive fixed site for the NAWQA 	
     study unit.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD.--
	SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE:  Maximum, 440 micromhos, February 20, 1980; minimum 120 micromhos, March 11, 1979.
	WATER TEMPERATURE:  Maximum, 30.0`C, August 1, 2, 1975; minimum, 0.0`C, on many days during winter period.
	SEDIMENT CONCENTRATIONS: Maximum daily, 805 µg/L, January 2, 1979; minimum daily, 1 µg/L, August 4, 5, 1979.
	SEDIMENT DISCHARGES:  Maximum daily, 192,000 tons, January 2, 1979; minimum daily, 22 tons, August 5, 1979.

REMARKS.--The following data are for trace elements and other constituents that were part of the suspended-
	sediment fraction of the water sample.  Suspended sediments were dewatered using a continuous flow centrifuge,
	dried, and analyzed directly for total metals using a nitric, hydrofluoric, perchloric acid digestion.  Whole
	water contributions by the suspended sediment were then calculated using the suspended-sediment concentration
	in kilograms per liter (kg/L) and the analyte concentration in milligrams per kilogram (µg/kg) from the direct
	analysis of the suspended sediments, resulting in micrograms per gram (µg/g) concentrations.  Values reported
	in percent are the percent of that constituent in the suspended sediment.  Dashed lines (--) indicate no data
	available due to an insufficient amount of sediment in the sample.  When no trace element was detected in the
	sample, the default reporting value is the method detection limit preceded by a less-than sign (<).

LOCATION.--Lat 39`45'33", long 79`58'15", Greene County, Hydrologic Unit 05020005, on left bank 1,300 ft
   upstream from highway bridge at mine buildings at Shannopin, 1.2 mi north of Dunkard, 3.5 mi upstream from
   mouth, and 4 mi southwest of Greensboro.

DRAINAGE AREA.--229 mi2.

PERIOD OF RECORD.--October 1940 to current year.  Prior to December 1940 monthly discharge only, published in
   WSP 1305.

REVISED RECORDS.--WSP 1505:   1955.

GAGE.--Water-stage recorder.  Datum of gage is 806.25 ft above sea level (levels by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers).

REMARKS.--Records good except for estimated daily discharges, which are fair.  Some regulation at low flow by
   mine pumpage above station.  Several measurements of water temperature were made during the year.  U.S. Army
   Corps of Engineers satellite telemeter at station.

INSTRUMENTATION.--Daily record measured and collected at hourly intervals with in-situ probes and electronic data
	 loggers.

REMARKS.--All water-quality samples were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey except those
     furnished by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources as noted.  Interruptions in the daily 	
     record were due to malfunctions of the equipment.  Additional sites in the (NAWQA) fixed-station network
	 are shown in figure 6 on page 28.  An explanation of selected abbreviations used in the water-quality
     tables are given on pages 29-31.

REMARKS.--The following data are for trace elements and other constituents that were part of the suspended-
	sediment fraction of the water sample.  Suspended sediments were dewatered using a continuous flow centrifuge,
	dried, and analyzed directly for total metals using a nitric, hydrofluoric, perchloric acid digestion.  Whole
	water contributions by the suspended sediment were then calculated using the suspended-sediment concentration
	in kilograms per liter (kg/L) and the analyte concentration in milligrams per kilogram (µg/kg) from the direct
	analysis of the suspended sediments, resulting in micrograms per gram (µg/g) concentrations.  Values reported
	in percent are the percent of that constituent in the suspended sediment.  When no trace element was detected
	in the sample, the default reporting value is the method detection limit preceded by a less-than sign (<).

LOCATION.--Lat 40`14'24", long 79`48'24", Allegheny County, Hydrologic Unit 05020006, on left bank 500 ft upstream
   from highway bridge at Sutersville, 2.1 mi downstream from Sewickley Creek, at mile 15.2.

DRAINAGE AREA.--1,715 mi2.

                                             WATER-DISCHARGE RECORDS

PERIOD OF RECORD.--October 1920 to current year.  Monthly discharge only for some periods, published in WSP 1305.

REVISED RECORDS.--WSP 743:   Drainage area.  WSP 1305:   1924, 1926 (M), 1931 (M).  WSP 1435:   1935-36.

GAGE.--Water-stage recorder.  Datum of gage is 733.36 ft above sea level.  Prior to June 1, 1939, nonrecording
   gage at site 500 ft downstream at same datum.

REMARKS.--Records good except for estimated daily discharges, which are fair.  Flow regulated since 1925 by Deep
   Creek Reservoir, since 1943 by Youghiogheny River Lake 58 mi upstream, and by several smaller reservoirs above
   station.  Several measurements of water temperature were made during the year.  U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
   satellite telemeter at station.

	WATER TEMPERATURE:  October 1996 to June 1997.

INSTRUMENTATION.--Daily record measured and collected at hourly intervals with an in-situ probe and electronic
     data logger.

REMARKS.--All water-quality samples were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey except for those 	
     furnished by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources as noted.  Interruptions in the daily 	
     record were do to malfunctions of the equipment.  Additional sites in the (NAWQA) fixed-station network are 	
     shown in figure 6 on page 28.  An explanation of selected abbreviations used in the water-quality tables are
     given on pages 29-31.

LOCATION.--Lat 40`23'28", long 79`51'30", Allegheny County, Hydrologic Unit 05020005, near right bank on river
   guide wall 300 ft upstream from dam at lock 2 at Braddock, 1,700 ft downstream from Turtle Creek, and 11.2 mi
   upstream of confluence with Allegheny River.

DRAINAGE AREA.--7,337 mi2.

                                             WATER-DISCHARGE RECORDS

PERIOD OF RECORD.--October 1938 to current year.  Monthly discharge only for some periods, published in WSP 1305.

GAGE.--Water-stage recorder and fixed-crest concrete dam control with streamward lock chamber usable as floodway
   during high flow since 1951.  Datum of gage is 709.66 ft above sea level (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers bench
   mark).  Prior to Aug. 13, 1951, at site 700 ft upstream, and Aug. 13, 1951 to Nov. 8, 1990 at present site at
   datum 2.50 ft lower.

REMARKS.--No estimated daily discharges.  Records good.  Flow regulated by locks and hydroelectric plants, since
   1938 by Tygart Lake, since 1926 by Lake Lynn, since 1925 by Deep Creek Reservoir, since 1943 by Youghiogheny
   River Lake, and since 1990 by Stonewall Jackson Lake, combined capacity, 779,000 acre-ft.  Figures of daily
   discharge include slight diversion from Beaver Run Reservoir in the Kiskiminetas River Basin to the borough of
   Jeannette in the Monongahela River Basin.  U.S. Army Corps of Engineers satellite telemeter at station.

EXTREMES OUTSIDE PERIOD OF RECORD.--Flood of Mar. 18, 1936 reached a stage of 38.8 ft from floodmarks, discharge,
   210,000 ft3/s.

PERIOD OF RECORD.--October 1958 to September 1993 (discontinued). September 1994 to current year.

PERIOD OF DAILY RECORD.--
	SPECIFIC CONDUCTANCE:  January 1973 to October 1975.
	WATER TEMPERATURE:  January 1973 to September 1979, November 1996 to current year.
	SUSPENDED SEDIMENT DISCHARGE:  January 1973 to September 1979.

INSTRUMENTATION.--From January 1973 to September 1979, specific conductance and water temperature were once daily
     readings by an observer.  From January 1973 to September 1979, suspended-sediment samples were collected 	
     daily and more often during storm events by an observer.  From November 1996 to current year, daily records
	 of water temperature were measured and collected at hourly intervals with an in-situ probe and electronic 	
     data logger.

REMARKS.--All water-quality samples were collected and analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey.  Interruptions
	 in the daily record were do to malfunctions of the equipment.  Additional sites in the (NAWQA) fixed-station
	 network are shown in figure 6 on page 28.  An explanation of selected abbreviations used in the water-
     quality tables are given on pages 29-31.

EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD.--
	WATER TEMPERATURE:  Maximum, 30.0`C, on several days during the summer periods; minimum, 0.0`C, on several
	 days each year before 1979 water year.
	SEDIMENT CONCENTRATIONS:  Maximum daily, 830 µg/L, March 15, 19, 1978; minimum daily, 2 µg/L,
	 November 29, 1976.
	SEDIMENT DISCHARGES:  Maximum daily, 210,000 tons, January 12, 1974; minimum daily, 14 tons, February 8, 1977.

EXTREMES FOR CURRENT YEAR.--
	WATER TEMPERATURE:  Maximum, 30.0`C, July 25; minimum 0.5`C, January 19, 20, 21, 29, 30.
