Incidental observations of osprey nests during eagle nest surveys from mid-1970's through the 1999 nesting season. Most of the coastal sites were marked on 1:24,000 topo maps; some coastal sites and most of the northern inland sites had been marked on 1:62,500 scale topo maps before 1:24,000 maps were available.

Description: This coverage includes the best available osprey nest location data for Maine through the 1999 nesting season. Data on eagle points and wading birds is incomplete and is maintained in separate databases by MDIFW. This coverage was created by on-screen digitizing using a background of NWI wetlands and digital images of current topographic maps (1:24000 scale). Map numbers used in coding are an internal MDIFW assigned number that was hand written on the maps.

Item Name Definition
ospreyid Osprey nest ID as designated by map number and nest number (MMM-NN). Nests without assigned numbers were designated with map number and "osp" (131-osp).
eagleid Eagle nest ID, designated by a territory number and an alpha designation for the nest (since eagle territories usually have several alternate nests). A few nests outside MDIFW jurisdiction were designated: 999eagle.
comments Comments on the maps about the nest sites. A few heron rookeries were noted on the maps, and are designated with a "herons" entry in this field. Some map numbers are recorded here for eagle nests but due to time constraints this is incomplete.

Data Restrictions: Transfer and use of this data is restricted. This data may not be transferred or redistributed except by the Source Agency or the Automation Agency. Written permission is required from the Source Agency for this data to be distributed outside of the USFWS by the Automation Agency. For map products displayed for other than Source and Automation Agency use, point data of eagles may not be displayed as points but may be displayed with a ½ mile diameter circle. Credit should always be given to the Source Agency and the Automation Agency when this data is displayed on map products.
