New card key system for Building 201

Employees will now need their badges to enter Argonne-East's Building 201 during off hours.

A new card reader system will be effective beginning Monday, May 22. Employees will be required to use their badges for entry into the building during the following off hours: Monday -- Friday 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.; 24 hours a day Saturday and Sunday; and 24 hours a day on common laboratory and DOE holidays.

During these periods, employees can enter the building at both the west rear and east rear entrances by scanning their badges through the card reader.

When more than one person is entering at the same time, each individual must scan his or her own badge. If any problems arise and entry is blocked, an outdoor phone located at the west rear entrance can be used to call security.

Other doors, including the dock and lobby doors, will remain locked and may not be used to enter the building during off hours.

According to Don Reigle (SDD), Buildings 4, 200, 202, 205, 211, 212, 216 and 222 have already been equipped with card readers. Installation of a card reader system also has been proposed for Buildings 108 and 951 -- the Recreation Building.

ET duo receives `Greatest IMPACT' award

Roger Carlson and William Brewer (both ET) have won the "Greatest IMPACT of the Year" award for 1994.

Each will receive $250 in savings bonds. Their energy-saving recommendation will save the laboratory about $4,100 per year.

Carlson and Brewer recommended that warm air near the ceilings of high-bay buildings be used to heat the occupied level. Fans are being installed for this purpose.

They also suggested replacing the existing buildings' barometric exhaust back-draft dampers with motorized dampers. The roof-mounted dampers exhaust air to the outside. Existing dampers tend to open when the wind blows, wasting heat. Motorized dampers should be installed by May.

The IMPACT program lets Argonne employees express concerns, voice problems and offer suggetions to improve health, safety, and the environment and productivity and operations at the laboratory.

Employees whose suggestions are adopted by the laboratory are entered in a quarterly drawing for a savings bond. A plaque is awarded for suggestions which save significant costs, or result in marked improvements in productivity or environment, safety and health practices.

Employees having more than one significant suggestion adopted by the laboratory will receive a special medallion which can be displayed on the wood base of the award.

Adopted suggestions are reviewed each year and a "Greatest IMPACT" is selected. The winner receives a $500 savings bond.

Employee suggestions and concerns are handled directly by the IMPACT coordinator, who asks the person most experienced with the issue to provide a prompt response or take necessary action. Suggestions can be made anonymously.

    Battery program developers
    receive Pacesetter award

Kevin Myles and Donald Vissers (both CMT) won Pacesetter Awards for establishing a lithium polymer battery program at Argonne. As a result of their work, Argonne has joined with 3M Corp. and Hydro-Quebec to develop new advanced lithium polymer batteries for the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium. The program is a cornerstone of the United States' effort to produce batteries for electric vehicles. Argonne's role in the joint research is funded at $4.9 million.

    A-West employee recognized
    for cleanup, renovation efforts

Roland Smith (RPS) earned a Pacesetter Award for successfully coordinating and completing a comprehensive cleanup campaign at the Argonne-West site and for the management of the L&O Conference Room renovation.

Employees can earn Pacesetter Awards for extraordinary effort in meeting or exceeding difficult deadlines or demands of a technical, administrative or sponsor-related nature. In addition, Pacesetters are awarded for innovations, discoveries, program developmentand cost-cutting suggestions. Each award consists of $500 and a distinctive pin.

Phone system ready for new area code

New telephone area code changes are coming, and Argonne-East is ready, according to Mike Vonder Heide, Section Head of Telecommunications Services at ECT.

Argonne and the rest of DuPage County will have a new area code, 630, by January 1998; the north and northwest suburbs' new code, 847, goes into effect Jan. 20, 1996. The laboratory's PBX telephone system has already been programmed to allow calls to and from the new area codes.

The new area codes are needed to remedy the rapidly diminishing supply of telephone numbers in Chicagoland caused by the unprecedented increase in the number of cellular phones, fax machines, modems, and pagers. The supply of 708 numbers is expected to run out early next year. The 630 area code may take effect sooner than the January 1998 deadline to ensure an adequate supply of numbers.

There will be a "grace period" from January through April 1996 when customers in both the 847 and 708 area codes may begin dialing 1 + area code + seven-digit-number for calls between their area codes, but seven-digit calls will still be completed. After April 1996, a call between the new 847 area code and all other area codes will require 11-digits.

Questions on the new area codes can be directed to Vander Heide at ext. 2-2764.

Lab honored for helping small business

Argonne has been honored by the U.S. Department of Energy for its efforts to bolster small business.

Argonne is required by federal regulations to set aside certain subcontracts for small business. But in fiscal year 1994, the laboratory exceeded its goal by 46 percent -- about $8 million.

"The credit goes to the buyers and contract specialists for their appreciation and understanding of the federal requirements," said Procurements Manager Dennis Bugielski (SSD-PRO). "They're the ones who beat the bushes to find the subcontractors."

"It's a real milestone," said Diana Thompson (SSD-PRO), Argonne's small business liaison officer. "It looks like we'll be doing even better in 1995."

Thompson and Bugielski accepted the "Managing and Operating Contractor of the Year" award at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. The award was presented by Energy Secretary Hazel O'Leary.

Scharping named `volunteer of the year'

Ronald Scharping (OTD) has received the 1994 Spirit of Service -- Volunteer of the Year Award from the Illinois Credit Union System.

The award is given to a volunteer whose achievements create stronger member and community awareness of credit unions. Scharping was honored for his six years of service to the Argonne Credit Union. He has been involved in nearly all the credit union's committees and volunteered to be board secretary his first year. He served as chairman of the board for three years -- from 1992 to 1995. Under his leadership, the credit union attained and maintained the top credit union rating from the Deparment of Financial Institutions and The National Credit Union Administration.

Walking and fitness program to begin

Argonne-East employees still have time to join the Walking Program sponsored by the Preventive Health and Wellness Program.

Participants are required to complete a medical form before registering. Forms are available in the Medical Department in Building 201.

Beginning Tuesday, May 30, participants will meet each Tuesday and Thursday (weather permitting) at 11:30 a.m. under the trees across from the Building 213 cafeteria entrance.

Participants may join in 45 minutes of aerobic exercise consisting of a warm-up, a walk, a cool-down and a muscle stretching and toning period. They will be instructed by an exercise physiologist.

For more information, call ext. 2-2813.

    Specht advances in Toastmasters' contest

Mary Kay Specht (ESH) won first place for dramatic reading at the Toastmasters' International division level contest. Specht is competing at the district level Friday, May 19, in Glen Ellyn.

Speakers from more than 130 clubs will compete with Specht for top honors in the dramatic reading competition.
