Rail and Sea Carriers Will Benefit from Opening an Automated Commercial Environment Account
Field Readiness Coordinator Spotlight: Gianna Trento

(01/14/2009)
Like many U.S. Customs and Border Protection employees, Operations Specialist Gianna Trento finds her position meaningful because her work directly affects the security of U.S. borders.

As a field readiness coordinator in the New York field office, Trento informs personnel at the New York/Newark and John F. Kennedy International Airport service ports of all Automated Commercial Environment-related news. She also assists each port in defining which roles within ACE are suitable for specific positions, as each CBP position requires different functions within ACE. “We analyze existing Automated Commercial System functions to ensure entry supervisors, for example, will have corresponding roles within ACE,” explains Trento. Before each ACE deployment goes live, it is Trento’s job to make sure qualified personnel will have the same access in ACE as they have in ACS.

The idea of going paperless with ACE is appealing to Trento because “having electronic versions of documents available via the ACE Secure Data Portal will allow not only entry specialists, but all trade-related positions, the opportunity to conduct their reviews more efficiently. It eliminates the concern of misplacing files and documents.” She is also pleased that using ACE will offer an environmentally friendly way of doing business.

Trento is eager to use the ACE report functionality. “As an operations specialist, I provide oversight for many different programs and the reports functionality will enable me to enhance that oversight,” says Trento.

Trento enjoys working with CBP officers, agriculture specialists and import specialists. “Being involved in a counterfeit merchandise and apparel investigation gave me the chance to work closely with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other offices within CBP,” says Trento. This exposure to other offices’ roles within CBP allows her to learn about different aspects of CBP from her colleagues and motivates her to do her best.

Trento received the 2007 Commissioner’s Award for trade and facilitation. Her nine-year career at CBP began in the New York field office. In addition to her current position, she has been a paralegal specialist and an entry specialist. Trento has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in criminal justice leadership.
